Opinions? Favourite parts?

I’ve always enjoyed this novel, especially the chapter where he kills the kid at the zoo.

My take on the ending is that Patrick has indeed committed serial murders, proven to us by the cab driver.

>> No.16041117

how do you reconcile the homeless man being alive, that he had killed earlier? I always assumed it was all just going on inside his head, the rage brought about from being so alienated and isolated.

>> No.16041285

Is it pretentious to say that worrying about whether he did or did not kill anyone is completely irrelevant? Maybe he did, maybe he didn't, maybe the cab driver mistook him for another yuppie like Pat and everyone else does all the time. Who gives a fuck?
My favorite part was when he was re renting that movie and the guy who gets the movies realized it was him renting it for the 36th time and then he gets anxious and has to lean over to check the cashiers shoes. That or him going buckwild because he used an expired coupon after a murder.

I agree entirely. I feel this way about most media: theories about "what if it was all a dream" or "what if it was all in their head" are really fucking pointless. Unless it's done in a way that actively changes the themes of the work (like Dr. Caligari), it is an utterly banal point to make. Essentially, all fiction consists of idealizing the real into fictional narratives; whether it is the author converting life into a narrative, or the main character converting their own life into an inner narrative, it does not fucking matter. Either way, it's still a representation of the conflict of higher ideals. That's why these theories are so fucking stupid and pointless, as they can't comprehend fiction on a philosophical level, but instead have to engage with it literally (like children who can't distinguish fiction from reality). It's rather sad, and if I had a quarter for every "theorist" I'd like to bash the skull of, I'd be a very rich man.

No, I agree with you. I think the purpose of the book is less a murder mystery and more to explore this character's very fucked up headspace.

The fuckery matters in the sense that it creates an aesthetic effect, a book where it was unambiguous would not produce the same feeling in the reader

I hear contradicting opinions that the book is hilarious or its a boring series of lists.

It was another homeless man, at least I thought so. He said he blinded that homeless man "one spring", it seemed to me he was talking about an earlier time than when he blinded and killed that nigga and his dog.

I love this book. Absolutely hilarious. Yeah i think he probably did some killing, like you said the taxi driver kind of confirms it. I think everyones just self interested like Bateman to care.

Pretty great book. It's absolutely hilarious, and the violence manages to be very effective. The social commentary is nothing special by modern standards (only braindead neocons like Reaganomics nowadays), but it must have been quite powerful at the time. Still, as far as this concept goes, Child of God is still better.

Patrick wandering the beach at night, eating handfuls of sand and baby crabs always stuck with me. Also it was interesting to see their relationship here, away from anyone to show off to. There is glimmer of real love is there, but it quickly fades away, and they fly back to their empty lives in NY.
