One of the books I remember most fondly from childhood is 'Strider' by Beverly Cleary. It was this comfy story about a young teen (?) and a dog he befriends on the beach, then adopts. One of those books for a different era of kids, that you'd find in a fusty corner of some bargain bin, but I loved it.

Weird thing is that I and my siblings are all at the age where we should start having kids but none of us do. My parents have this cat. She's sociable and playful so we all like her. My dad absolutely adores her though. He gets anxious if he hasn't seen her in fifteen minutes and has to go looking for her. I hear him talking to her like she's a baby and coo at her. It's obvious as hell that she's a surrogate grandchild for him. However, he never puts any effort into taking care of her. Doesn't feed her, doesn't clean her litter box, doesn't clip her claws.
