Does /lit/ read Visual Novels? What do you think about them?

I was planning on reading steins;gate once my japanese has gotten to the point of being able to read vns, so I would like to know how difficult it is to read it compared to other vns?

There's a lot of scientific jargon so I would assume relatively hard, try starting something from the low end here to gauge your ability first.

A medium with a lot of potential, which lives on only because the opportunity to live up to that potential was missed.

I'm writing one myself. I do enjoy VNs, but the majority of them aren't very literary. It's always a treat when you find one that is.

>> No.16027249

I was into them a lot for a good while, but I finally got over it and got back into reading normal (western) novels. Still a few I'd like to read, though, should they ever get translated. My favorite VN is Hanachirasu.

Good idea, thanks for the list.

umineko is great but too long, ever17 has a great final route but boring almost everything else, subahibi has great ideas with bad execution, steins gate is overall great but never reaches the emotional peaks of muv luv alternative ou clannad/little busters (even if the quality of these are very unstable), fata morgana has a big dip in quality in the middle but it's good. g senjou no maou is bad, white album 2 is non-stop depressing shit (cuda is great), baldr sky dive2 was disappointing had my expectations too high, gameplay is fun tho.kara no shoujo 1 is good but the hscenes are out of control, kinda funny desu. fate/stay night is not my thing, I don't like it but also don't hate the time I spent reading (fate/zero is great and short), cross channel -same as subahibi but worse overall. zero escape was fun 999 is the best overall, vlr has the best moments, ztd is bad. danganronpa was not that impressive but had fun moments, case 5 on dangan 2 was great and the ending on v3 was really good but weebs hate it.

Pretty much every VN I've read that was more than 10 hours long has had some substantial flaws to it.

Try Damekoi, by the same writer. It's a romance drama as well, but it's more light-hearted, funny, and enjoyable. It also has the rare aspect of having an adult (28), divorced protagonist.

>> No.16027364

only played/read the zero escape series. 999 is one of my favorite games of all time, the other two are shit. the writing isn't really good but it utilizes the medium perfectly and the story would be impossible to tell otherwise. only 15-20 hours if you do everything so give it a shot if you are interested

And how do they think they're going to handle the text display? Re-script the entire UI?

Have you seen the remake of Kikokugai? It has vertical text as well. Some guy made a patch to insert the translation of the original game into the remake and he was able to turn the textbox horizontal on his own, so I don't think it's that big of a deal at all.

The music tends to do more than the pictures IMO.
