Can someone tell me what you think about friendship in The Lord of the Rings novels? I have a thesis on friendship and any one of them is very welcome, whether it is between Sam and Frodo (most especially), Legolas and Gimli etc. Please help!

The title of the first novel "Fellowship of the Ring" itself suggests that the novel and perhaps the series as a whole will focus on the theme of friendship, most obviously by exploring the notion of a fellowship between individuals from the various races of Middle Earth. While the Fellowship of the [number] characters itself is of primary importance to the narrative of the first novel, the more intimate fellowships or friendships formed within that group are also examples of Tolkien's analysis of the value and complexity of friendship.

The novel begins by depicting the four hobbits' escape from the Shire, and due partly to the fact that the hobbits themselves are rather childlike both in stature and disposition, the opening chapters read much like a typical children's adventure story with several rather naive, unworldly characters enjoying the thrill of exploring territory beyond the small parcel of land they are familiar with. The darker themes of the novel become apparent when they are hunted by the Nazgul who, despite themselves belonging to a kind of fellowship, are essentially united only in their sinister pursuit of power which will be afforded to them on recovering the Ring. The fellowship shared by the hobbits is however difference in that it is defined by a sense of selflessness and duty towards their kinfolk and the wider world of Middle Earth which is under threat by Sauron and his allies.

In Rivendell we see the formation of a fellowship between the different races who, as Tolkien makes clear, are not natural allies and who view one another with indifference or hostility. The Elves and Dwarves are hostile towards one another, as is evident by Gimli and Legolas's initial attitude towards one another, and Gimli's later hostility towards the elves of [that forest city]. However....

That's what I said. I don't know exactly what it's called in English. Thesis, dissertation. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Yes, basically I have to write about 60 pages about friendship in LOTR and I could really use a head start. I read the novels years ago and I don't remember much and I also have the disadvantage of knowing the movies by heart, but this is a problem because they are different in many aspects...

Also, if you know any websites or documents that could help me those could also be useful. I just cannot find anything on the internet, despite my teacher saying that it is a big theme and it is impossible to not find something on the internet. Well, i can't find anything
