The old books are public domain. They cost nothing to publish other than the actual production. They are a way for publishers to make money without paying for the talent side, but every publisher publishes these books. One way to cash in on public domain is to make a "new translation". P&V are hyped up new translators who are actually shit. I've read their translations of books I've already read before and they are horrible. They have no feeling, no soul, they miss everything. Of course Reddit, a bunch of muppets who believe anything that's sold to them, love P&V, as do all hipster muppets. The best imo is Garnett, and I've read them all

also you have to consider there have been no improvements in translation. We automatically assume everything is better today, but think for a second about why is the book you're about to read, which was written 150 years ago, way better than what's being published today? Everything was of a much higher standard in that era. There actually never was any reason for a new translation other than to cash in, and the new translators are like the "made in China" version. It's all about money, not quality

I hear P&V are good translators for Dostoyevsky, but everything else is pretty shit. I tried to read the P&V Master and Margarita and it seemed so clumsy I couldn’t get more than a few pages into it. So I’m wary of their Dosto.

I have a copy of Katz. Haven’t read it, but it looks okay.

People only say that because he is a writer of ideas, mental state, and action, and his style is generally journalistic. With even distribution of inadequate translation choices, his message still gets through. This wonkiness isn't suitable for authors with distinct style, nor it's the best option available.

But we don't even need to get to the translation quality. P&V are promoted the same way they promote an unconventional healing medicine, by stating that everything else is dire shit that is wrong, and cherry-picking exorbitant praise from figures that look authoritative but don't actually belong to that specific field. Actual translators are gnashing their teeth from their ignorant stance on translation.
