I was looking at /lit/'s recommendation charts and found this one.

Do these charts still have validity?

At the very least this chart makes no sense, because it rates George RR Martin above modern gods like Michael Moorcock, Brandon Sanderson, Mark Lawrence, and Patrick Rothfuss.

For some reason I thought Titus Groan was rated higher.

This board massively overrates both Dan Simmons and Gene Wolfe. I’m 90% convinced people just like the cover art of their books because the stories are garbage.

George RR Martin has been rightly put abouve those hacks. You would have known had you read ASOIAF. But I doubt you can read anything not having the vocabulary and attention span of "modern" times.

Oh wow, someone saved my chart from a couple years ago. I think I still have the Photoshop file so I might update it.

It's not supposed to be a rec chart, OP, but rather how I'd rate those books, and I made it to get recommendations from /sffg/ based on my personal taste.
"Fun" is basically that. A broad category for imperfect books for one reason or another, that made me have fun.

>Gods
Is this bait?
Sanderson is terrible. Shit dialogue, shit characters and bloated anime.
Moorcock is formulaic. The depth of character from the first Elric is turned into a cliche and his pathos is made into a joke (an emo). Moorcock spent the next decades churning out the same stories over and over.
Mark Lawrence is pretty bad. Edgy for no reason, and if it's supposed to be self awarely edgy, I just didn't get it.

As someone who is usually not interested in scifi, I kinda wanna read Hyperion, it sounds interesting. Will i like it?

>> No.15992713

Name of the Wind is one of the best stand alone novels in all of fantasy, and I absolutely cannot see why so many people hate it.
Wise Man's Fear and whatever that novella / half book thing he put out are total trash, but Name of the Wind is both written beautifully, and has some amazing characters.

When you learn of its publication history, how no publisher wanted to run it and Herbert wasn't in touch with any genre writers for revisions and criticism, and how the first book was published by a car's manual publisher with no literary editor in place, you realize why it's so poorly written.

I honestly don't see the appeal to read it if you're older than 15 or if you have grown out of Star Wars, but that's just me.

A few things, but mainly the prose and melodrama. I don't mind woman writers but this felt way too womanly. The ridiculous romance, the unnecessary clothes descriptions (because one of the writer's hobbies is recreating historical fashion and LARPing), the trite prose when describing males or a romantic gesture. It veered from the tryhard lyrical to the utmost cliched. When you have so many bits that don't work at all on every single paragraph it's hard to ignore them.
The alien world setting was pretty unique, that's probably the best part. Even though some aspects are left deliberately very vague, she overuses some signs, the most dull ones that rely on her shitty prose, and by the 20th time I read of some subtle colorful energy wave, it made me want to pluck my eyes out.

Why? Asking sincerely. When I see the religion and concepts explained anywhere it sounds erudite enough. I thought that made books good, not bad. Haven't read Dune but nobody's really told me yet what makes it bad and some people praise it some people hate it. I don't know who to trust.

Gormenghast is a work of art. Its definitely on par with LOTR. It's just not full of "epic Medieval fantasy battles" so the braindead, ADHD-riddled teenagers that make these lists rank it low.

>> No.15993889

>>15993610
I found it boring. It has a strange pacing, a bit of a whimsical fairly tale that ends too suddenly. The writing was definitely better than Black Sun Rising's, but not particularly great. I mean, people have described it to me as "great prose" but I don't think "Alessan swore succinctly" is a good indication of good writing.
No matter how much the guy stressed this terrible atrocity committed upon this innocent people, at no point did I share their sadness, even though you're battered over the head with it.

>Gormenghast
It wasn't that great. Maybe I would have loved it if I'd had read it before I even knew who Tim Burton was. Even if it was original, the prose was way too visual (therefore boring if you don't find the setting that interesting). Some people swear it's on LotR's level (Moorcock claims it's better). Not me.
>GoT is better
Fun != better

Ah yes, the epic medieval fantasy battles of Book of the New Sun, where 5 chapters are devoted to climbing a mountain and talking with a two headed monster who has an erect penis all the time.
