15985502 No.15985502 [Reply] [Original]

Does worthless consooming still apply to buying books? I have managed to stop my previous consooming habit of collecting action figures on the advice of /pol/ and have been saving a ton of cash. But i find myself still ordering at least 6-8 books a month off Amazon Prime. Even when the book is available used and cheaper from a private seller i still always go for the Prime option to get next day delivery. I have stacks of brand new books sitting all over the floor as there is no more room on my shelving units. My wife has tripped over a pile of them and is complaining about the number of books lying around because we have a toddler and she cant watch him if he goes and helps himself to the books.

I know most here love books but do you purchase actual physical copies of books or read everything digitally? I've tried kindle i just can't take it. Is what i'm doing still considered to be pathetic consoomerism or is it fine if it's books we are buying?

seems really fun, it's always good to see diplomacy between partners and both being happy with the results, also, that piece costs like 2k so it's not a decision he can make for himself as they are a family now and finances are responsability of responsible adults but you will never understand it as your brain is too small for basic concepts and you'll be 140k in debt way after you leave your parent's house at 31. So i'm happy for him.

Everybody always assumes it’s about the money, but the wife will probably have to display a 4 foot wide ugly-looking lego model in their home.
Those things never even look like what they are a model of. Like, it’s so distinctive it’s not a good representation of the Millennium Falcon. It looks more like you are really into legos than Star Wars.

I buy my books second-hand through Amazon's seller option. You can get shit that's listed for $20 for $3-5 plus $4 for shipping most of the time. Books stores and library book sales where they're off-loading books are also ideal because you'll get them dirt cheap. Never pay full price for books anymore and I don't buy more than 2-3 at a time. Once I've read those I'll buy 2-3 more unless its a library sale or something and its a one-shot kind of thing.

I cant find a good reason to buy books for 10-20 usd each when I can just pirate most things instantly. I used to be anti-kindle because i liked the "feel" of books, but reading is reading.

I only buy books if they are nice editions or if I cant find a good ebook of it nowadays.

If it's a book that I don't really care about and know for a fact I'm only going to read once I'll try to read it digitally. I find them more annoying because they are harder to navigate, it's harder to mark things in them and you have to worry about battery/reading in heat/losing your reader when you aren't at home. But you obviously save space and money.

I'd say you're bordering on mindless consumerism if you continue to buy shit while having stacks and stacks of unread books at home. Or if you find yourself shopping for the prettiest rather than the best textual version of a book.

I cucked myself out of buying books. I'm in Latin America, yet if the author writes in English, I would only read it if I found it in a shop and the book must be in English (which is relatively difficult). The books I buy are only from a list that I made. And, I will only buy books with money I made from selling other used books in November.

Its not diplomacy. Its bartering. Its not healthy to barter for things you want from eachother. Being nice to your wife as something you have to be rewarded for. Spending 2k is not a decision for himself, but in this case its her decision for herself. She allows it, so it happens.

Acting like buying and building something like that, given it’s size and expense, is normal at his age makes you part of the problem

>> No.15986079

OP, it's obvious that you don't have a coherent view of what you truly want in life. The only reason you're buying books instead of action figures is because "Books" have the social capital of being "good for you," yet it's clear that despite their potential for knowledge, you are using them for material validation.

You need to learn moderation. You will never be able to escape this by fleeing into a new hobby. Whatever new mantle you take on will contribute to your destruction until you confront the void in your life. Will you be on /fit/ next month asking if it's really true that you can exercise too much, only to injure yourself when you don't learn your limits? Will you be on /biz/, sure that you're investing your money carefully, only to lose it all when it turns out your "low risk" choices still had enough risk to fuck you? Anything that's good for us can destroy us when we don't know the purpose we use it for.

You have a wife and child, a treasure of unspeakable value. Focus on that, and if it's still not enough then seek help from outside. I'm not one to recommend psychology (and avoid psychotropic drugs at all costs), but in your case it might help you towards the answer.

You must look inward, OP

Wrong. It's wasteful of resources, time, life, and it promotes addictive, infantile behavior for the weak minded. I have many young adult friends who know nothing about the world or anything of substance, because they spend all their time indulging in childish frivolities because they see nothing wrong with it. Consooming does not need to be banned but it should be criticized for the waste of life it is.

What's the optimal way to sell books online when you don't want to make a job out of it?
My local Craiglist equivalent proves to be quite shite. I've read book flipping tutorials focusing on Amazon FBA but the whole setup sounds a bit overkill for a few dozens of books max per year.

Just be honest with yourself, do you like to buy the books because you genuinely enjoy having them around and like the fact that you can reach and get it whenever you want? Then there is nothing wrong with it, as long as you have the money to spend.
If its just because you feel you have to buy something and it might as well be books, or because you want to look smart by having a lot of books or any other shitty reason, then work on stopping.
