Hows "American Psycho" by Bret Easton Ellis? I want to read it but don't know if its good. Should I read it or skip it? Opinions please.

>> No.1597185

Just watch the movie instead. Books suck.

Yeah, books are lame.

>> No.1597195

I trust my opinion over somebody else's, and saying this, I say that you should read the book, as you should read any book, if it is relevant to your research, thematic interest, or spiritual self. If you have considered reading it, then read it already. You won't be able to find your favourite book by hearing other people's opinions, but by reading books on your own will until you find the best one for yourself.

See the film with subtitles - that way you're practically reading the book.

Get the DVD of this, make the spoken language something you don't speak, and watch with english subtitles.

reading it now, dont like it personally, but thats because he keeps describing the fashion labels, but literally its like 3/4 of a page, "he was wearing a slim fit ralph lauren..... ZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz"

im going back to douglas adams me thinks

>> No.1597236

It's worth reading, yeah. I find some of Bret Easton Ellis's stuff really tedious (okay, your character is really vapid and shallow WE GET IT, but you could still trim a good 200 pages from Glamourama without losing that effect), but American Psycho is an example of the stuff he tends to do, done well and kept reasonably entertaining.

>> No.1597326

Go ahead and read it to see if you like it, but personally I didn't care for it at all. Tedious is the right word. But if you skip over the long-winded parts it's okay, it's interesting to see his mind break down.

Movie was funny.

How fucking werid, i came onto /lit/ for the first time ever to gauge peoples opinions on this book and this thread is right at the top..

Anyway, current reading it now but i would recommend watching the film first, that way it makes more sense of why he describes clothings and the like in such detail.

Enjoying it, so far i would say it's better then the film, can't help but reading lots of it in Christian Bales voice though

I had this too, except I didn't mind because the tone and voice Bale uses is perfect for Bateman.

Very true, i don't think anyone could of quite pulled off Bateman as well as he does

He could of cut out all of the yuppie scum clubbing/dating/dinner/meetings bullshit and had one of the best gore novels of all time- but i suppose we all have our ways.

Oh and also

Why is that drawing so entrancing and bizarre

Omg American Psycho is AMAZING. After A Clockwork Orange, Catcher in the Rye and everything by Nietzsche it's my fav.

One thing though, those sartorial descriptions! What's with those!? It's like - I'm not on a fashion blog LOL.

BUMP for a hard hitting and shocking book that hides a deep and at some times satirical look into the dark world of late 80s yuppie culture.

>> No.1597459

if you read it, the mistake most people make is to read passively and take the events and dialogue at face value

avoid doing that

>> No.1597463

>>1597459
you say that, but if you read any serious interview by the author, you'll find that it really is meant to be taken at face value, and that he is just shit.

Read the book. 3/4 of the killings in the book aren't in the movie, nor are the sex scenes, which are amazing.

>> No.1597676

The movie is so much better than the book.
