Kobo if you're a lazy faggot who can't be bothered to learn how to use Calibre properly and/or scared of le evil corporations.
Kindle if you don't give a fuck.
Just get one with a backlight and a cover because the screen is pretty fragile.

No point in doing that and it's the mentality of a digital hoarder retard who will download 1000 ebooks and won't even read 50 in 5 years.

I say barely because 1- kindle suggests me new books when I am done (except for the copied ones). 2- it comes with dictionary that I can access by holding over a word.

If you want none of that you can always root your devices and install something of your flavor. Some devices are easier to root than others so check before you buy.

Also, you can always use Calibre to copy your books to whatever you want.

This is almost impossible unless the source file has a weird encoding (most just use utf-8). I don't notice anything weird on that text you posted.
An EPUB is basically a zip file full of HTML and CSS code. Converting it to MOBI is just "copy pasting" all that text and zipping it into Amazon's proprietary version of EPUB (mobi, azw3). Sure you didn't mean from PDF?

Fiddling with the Do not add Detected Chapters and Do not add Table of Contents might produce a better TOC.

Having to "learn to use a program" is a sign that a program is designed poorly. Good design is intuitive. Besides being ugly, Calibre is also bloated. 104 MB for the installer? Fucking Electron apps are smaller.

Not him, but it all depends on the format of the ebook you downloaded. Kindles natively support certain formats (mobi, azw3 are the standard), but it can also read txt, html, pdf (though it sucks) and a few more.

So if you go to b-ok.cc or download a .mobi from libgen you can copy paste the file like it was a pendrive. It's just that 75% of the ebooks you can find online are in EPUB. Which, btw, is not due to Kobos or Nooks' popularities or anything, but rather for how easier it was to abuse the e-stores download/refund and rip them from digital libraries like Overdrive.

I have never used any of Amazon's programs to load books onto my kindle. I have an old kindle though, from 2012. When I plug it into my computer it is treated exactly like a flash drive and I just drag and drop books into a folder labelled "documents". I have never installed the Kindle program on my computer. I grabbed a paperwhite Kindle because I was sick and tired of trying to read outside on a normal screen, and so far it's been pretty great. I especially like how long the battery life is. What I don't like is the price, but I figure in a year or two it's going to seem like pocket change in hindsight.

I would like tabs in the experimental browser, though. The inability to look at more than one page and swap between makes it hard to read stuff like chan pages or fanfiction without frustration.

One nitpick I have with the paperwhite (which I assume is something to do with how the screen renders text) is that as you scroll it is a little fucked up for a half second before it finds it's place.

I agree, the data storage that we have is the dream of any ancient scholar. But between leaving my house and returning back home, I doubt I'm going to read more than a single book. Hence, I take a book off of the shelf and out with me.
Having your books physically existing within your home space also helps to keep them and their ideas within your mind. Having them buried within data storage makes them and their content easily forgettable. That's my experience anyway.

It's the convenience of deciding you wish you had brought something else, and there it is. It's also as small and thin as the lightest paperback. Honestly, it sounds like you have a book fetish than a love of reading, because I'm 100% certain that if you have a lot of books there are some gems on your shelf that in this instant you don't remember exist.

A third of my collection is in storage because my collection just got out of hand. There are books that I decide to re-read but would have to go dig through my crates to find. Now I can pick up a tablet or phone (because your Kindle/reader isn't the sole device you can use, remember) and read anything in my collection on a whim.

Convenience is a good reason, and one of the few I can find. I am personally prone to being distracted from what I'm reading by another book before I've finished the first one, so for that reason, I'm better off with one book on me at a time.
I could say the same about you, that you have a fetish for tech, as opposed to actually reading. I do have a lot of books on the shelf, some are absolute gems, some are complete shit, and some are in the middleground. I'm sure your ebook reader probably has a similar distribution of quality, and I'm sure you couldn't create a complete list of them from your memory either. I fail to see how that shows I have a book fetish and don't enjoy reading, or how anything you said applies to books but not ebooks.
I'm not without a phone or a computer that I also use every day to read things I either can't get or don't want in print.

I chose a Kindle PW over the Kobo Clara. My main reason for doing so is that the Kindle is waterproof and I read outdoors frequently. If you get Calibre and use """online libraries""" it doesn't really matter which you get. Haven't payed for a book since I got the Kindle. As for the different file types (kindle can only use PDF, mobi, and azw3 iirc), I've been able to get just about everything I wanted in the right format, though epub is more common. I think it's the kind of a thing where it's not worth to cheapen out on since you gonna use it a lot and frequently, like a phone. So if you're going to buy it, I'd reccomend buying something new and expensive. I got paperwhite 2 and have been using it for past year or so, i'm quite unhappy with the screen size, limited format reading and how certain books just don't look that good on it. And I prefer reading in my native language which is harder to find books than in english.
But I do love having an ereader, I prefer it to physical books even and I'll probably buy an expensive ass new one if I decide to get a job.

Kindle, but that's only because I bought the first 400$ kindle when it came out, I was so excited about the possibilities of e-readers.
