15942113 No.15942113 [Reply] [Original]

My sister went to a better high school than I did. These are some of the books they had here read that I haven't read. She left these books when she moved out. Which one should I read?

>> No.15942128

East of Eden is really good and I like the cover. I'd go for that

>> No.15942134

catcher in the rye. easy digestible book out of everything else there

Damn that's a lot of Russian lit for high school. I'd say it depends on what you're interested in first of all, but the best books in there are the Russian ones. The Genealogy of Morals is significant but not all that gripping. East of Eden is fine but Steinbeck is only important on the American scene. I'd Brothers Karamazov or Anna Karenina.

Also, the person who designed most of the curriculum was Swedish, maybe there is a lot of Russian influence in Sweden?

It received the Pacific Northwest Booksellers award; The Brothers K was a New York Times Notable Book in 1992 and won a Best Books Award from the American Library Association. It seems to have good reviews.

same desu. Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, Frankenstein, Treasure Island, and some Shakespeare. That's all the assigned reading in HS aside from a few short stories and poems printed and handed around (aside from Blake I remember nothing particularly /lit/ at all).

No, I got kicked out of that school. My dad decided to abuse me but not her so my mental health was much worse and I ruined my chance to go to a prestigious private school like a dumb fuck.

The story isn't incredibly riveting, but the detail of the characters and the scope of the book is what drew me in. Maybe try Pride and Prejudice as well if you are looking for books with more of a female focus?
>>15943731
It's a good read, I'd also recommend Cat on a Hot Tin Roof by Tennessee Williams.

Are you joking dude? In 4 years of high school English, we watched the Great Gatsby movie (it was optional) and read 1984, "Bless the Beasts and Children" whatever that is, and one of our choice, which was Catcher for me. We otherwise only read excerpts from textbooks.

No Shakespeare, none of the greats. Attended a somewhat rural HS

Same here, we read stuff like Brave New World, 1984, Tale of Two Cities, The Great Gatsby, Huckleberry Finn, Catcher in the Rye, To Kill a Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men, The Scarlet Letter, Shakespeare's various plays, Homer's works, etc, but nobody read Brothers Karamazov or War and Peace or Anna Karenina.

Trying to remember what I read my final two years of high school. I distinctly remember Dubliners, Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man, Ficciones, Things Fall Apart, some Shakespeare, Running in the Family, A Passage to India, I think the Oedipus plays?

>> No.15944979

>>15944085
That's definitely why. HS in united states suck when teaching literature other than excerpts from textbooks. Nigga, in my senior year i only read brave new world, araby, gulliver's travel, and the rhyme of the ancient mariner.

I also went to a school that had an IB program and this is most definitely why. What we read and what the kids not in the program read was night and day.

Does that matter at the end of the day? I met some kids that were in ib programs in college, and they were not that intelligent.

It doesn’t, there were a lot of idiots in those classes too. I’m just saying that the literature in that program was of a higher quality.

>> No.15945078

I didn’t. I never took school seriously so I never had the grades to get into anywhere prestigious. Watching all of my peers go on to become lawyers and doctors really stings.

>> No.15945092

>>15945078
Did they go to prestigious colleges? I ask because i cannot understand why parents would out their kids through that bullshit for them to end up in state colleges where anybody can get in.

>> No.15945145

>>15945092
They mostly went to UCLA and UC Berkeley. Some middle of the pack “smart kids” went to places like UC Davis, UC Irvine and UC San Diego. We had a few outliers that went to NYU, USC, and military academies.

I also like elfen lied
agel beats
I guess I'd categorize most of those as psychological horror/cynical something like that.
I'm watching Lain and I fucking love it.
I've seen the big name animes too, they're nice to get into, full of action but a bit generic.
My hero academia is like the formula form of gernic when it comes to those genre, I actually dislike it a lot.
I think blue exorcist is a nice transition of the two.
I still need to watch some more OG shit like Akria and fist of the north star.
I also like steins; gate and eva.
I'm not really that much of a weeb, if you like shit I didn't mention go ahead and tell me.
I also want to get more into manga.
But if you're really trying to shit on Gantz we're going to have a problem
n shit
