In fact you should read poetry translated even if you are proficient enough in the original language to read the prose in it. When the meaning is more or less exact, then you can grasp it clearly even if a bit slower, and losing the momentary impression is not that important. But if you will read something designed to operate fully with your senses and feelings, then getting slowed down and being forced to think on words and expressions meaning will significantly harm your experience. Of course the translator may lose or alter some details, but you may lose them even while reading the original.
