hello does anyone have advise on where to start with the dharmic faiths, namely hinduism and buddhism?

i would like a completely honest look at these faiths, not some watered down bullshit written by some western leftist to appeal to other western leftists.

Read Buddhism after Hinduism. Read Hinduism after Christianity.

not only is the best Gita, it's probably the cheapest book about "hinduism" you can find that's also worth reading, the low price is ridiculous.

Not really unless you are already committed to being a Hare Krishna member. Franklin Edgerton's translation is generally thought to be the most literal, each line in English corresponds to the original Sankrit lines. His scholarship is way outdated (first published 1944) so you can ignore the essays included with the translation. A Hindu translation I like is Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan's, he strikes a good balance between scholarly theology band devotional. He tends towards advaita vedanta but doesn't follow Shankar's completely so it's more balanced than the translations by Ramakrishna Mission monks like Swami Nikhilananda.
