I can't read without a beverage. If its morning ill have coffee and water, if its night ill have a decaf or a beer. One time I was in the university library and I had a few chapters to read but I forgot my water bottle so I just skipped the class and went home.

the real answer is somewhere in between. colonies retain some aspects of an older dialect that the motherland lost, but also developed new ones too. brits of 1700, wouldnt sound exactly like modern american or British. they would probably be rhotic like most general american accents, but other features might be more in line with general british. not to mention the wider veriety if dialects bqck then, but i am refering to high dialects of the educated.

In the past, art was constantly pushing for freer and freer expression (i.e. pushing the bounds of propriety), but there were other equally powerful forces (mainly religion) pushing back against it, so a fairly healthy equilibrium was maintained.

Now, the latter forces have mostly been removed, but art is still pushing as hard as ever, and the result is bad. Art should be censored ruthlessly for vulgarity & obscenity. It would produce better art and a better society.

tl;dr Lady Chatterley's Lover should be banned.

There is no shame reading Harry Potter as an adult, it has the purpose of being a simple and lightweight story, with characters everyone can relate to. It wasn't created to appeal to heavy philosophical or even themes too deep rooted in morality, but as something people could naively enjoy and identify with. Hating on HP is the same thing as hating on a regular kids book just because it isn't as profound as Brothers Karamazov.

Well but that's a problem with every popular book I would say. I've met more than one person who made Dosto and Nietzsche books, as well as their themes, their whole personality and were as insufferable as HP fanboys. I would guess it happens more with HP, but the problem aren't the books themselves or their literary merit, but how people start worshipping something they could slightly relate to because now it makes them a "book person".

>You're just dumb. Do you even like reading?
I'm reading several texts right now, including a Hemmingway which is under 200 pages.
From personal experience most of what I've read over 200 pages wasted a lot of time on inane bullshit that was unimportant.
That being said, I read a lot of works that are made up of smaller mostly-self-contained books such as religious texts and folklore lit a la Le Morte D'Arthur.
I haven't read Don Quijote mostly because I haven't studied Spanish in quite awhile though at one point I was decent enough to read entry-level texts. I'm kinda waiting for that urge to flair up again in which I'll probably use that book as a main driver of relearning the language. It'll just be a bit more tedious than my current reads because while I have a decent grasp on sentence structure and conjugation, I'm sure I'll be needing to consult a dictionary repeatedly.

Literally the opposite, they push dating on singles after age 16 and have young single adult wards for the purpose of making them date, and put pressure on singles to marry. They recommend dating a lot. What they forbid is sex before marriage, like the rest of Abrahamic religion normally does.
