Since there is a normative bias in favor of Western liberal democracy in academia, I never really encountered anything that challenged this or proposed alternatives. What are some good books against democracy?

Modern liberalism is anti-democracy, see how the hysterics about 'populism' and how they talk about Orban in Hungary threatening democracy, when he's in fact a democratically elected and popular leader who's simply just anti-liberal. Liberal and democracy are fast becoming contradictions.

Hobbes is a classic, but you should avoid conflating democracy and liberalism. One is a system of governance and the other is a concrete political ideology. Now if you want to see critiques of liberalism, both Schmitt and Marx had very detailed historical critiques. Dugin is a more contemporary anti-liberal academic. China has some as well, but they're generally not translated.

This is literally a fictional book about the Freikorps, what does this have to do with democracy?

Reading a book against democracy is counter-productive, you read tons of books and form your own opinion on the faults of democracy. This is the only true option
