I finally got around to finishing all of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

I wish I hadn't.

That ending.

>> No.1588719

I stopped reading mid way through the 3rd book

>> No.1588723

I stopped in the middle of the first chapter, because the writing was dreadfully bad.

Some bulldozer coming to a guy's kitchen. It read like a 3rd grader penned the novel.

No thanks.

>> No.1588725

Oh well, alright then.

I guess that is then of that discussion. Thanks /lit/.

>> No.1588727

I never read it. After seeing it on the tv I took it off my to-do list for fear of ruining that epic film/show.

obvious troll is obvious.

The third-grader bit gave you away. Better luck next time.

Actually, not a troll. I seriously did stop reading in the middle of the first chapter for the reason explained.

"Kettle, plug, fridge, milk, coffee. Yawn.

The word bulldozer wandered through his mind for a moment in search of something to connect with.

The bulldozer outside the kitchen window was quite a big one.

He stared at it.

"Yellow," he thought and stomped off back to his bedroom to get dressed."

Jesus fucking Christ.

Uh.

Maybe I am missing...the problem here.

This is the thought patterns of a man who's just woken up (Did he come from a pub the night before? Can't recall) The incoherent fuzziness was conveyed perfectly.
I can't believe you seriously think it continued that way. Tell me you've read Ayn Rand and I'll find you and feed you this mans books

You're discrediting the writing while trying to sound intelligent. You can say "wrote the novel." It's quite alright.

>> No.1588817

Honestly, I hated Hitchhiker's Guide too. I listened to the BBC radio version and had fun because it was something my dad and I could do together. Then I tried to read the things and it was awful. It was like trying to read a children's book as an adult: it just doesn't work.

ITT: a bunch of readers with undiscerning palates get pissed off when someone tells them the truth about the hack they love.

Had a pretty good laugh at this.

the first three books are pure awesome.

the last two are meh.
there's like a huge discontinuity there.

He was in the middle of 6th installment, which was going to be a Dirk Gently novel, but it was too good... But now its only partially out there in the compilation, The Salmon of Doubt.

In So Long and Thanks for All the Fish, we mostly follow Arthur on Earth II, he falls in love, learns to fly, and the last bit is about Marvin finally shutting off. A duller yet cheerier romp.
Mostly Harmless takes it all away. Good bits about a reincarnated character who keeps coming back as flies and things that Arthur unwittingly or thoughtlessly kills. My favourite part was the introduction or Random, Arthur's daughter.
I must have mentally blocked out the ending. Didn't care for it. Too pessimistic. Too bad about The Salmon of Doubt.

I don't like that slogan "enjoy yourself". It makes us sound like hedonists.

The only thing epic about the visual hitch-hiker's is The Eagles Journey of the Sorcerer.

I remember reading an interview that Adams wanted the whole cast dead so he knew exactly where they were when he went to continue the series.

I liked the second Dirk Gently book much more than anything else he wrote, he said he was most proud of his safari book but I thought it was kind of boring.

No kidding, and they can't even realize he stole most of his humor style from the internet.
