i read pick related who worked and lived in japan while modernization happened and he basically said the same thing. good book btw. nip students never seemed to think critically or tried to understand the why. never volunterally put their hand up to ask a question. they did it largely for the grade and social prestige. never wanting to learn why, but how. little curiosity. and this was comming from an absolute japanophile who studied their culture intensely and even married yellow. even thought the introduction of christianity to japan was a mistake.

i would highly recommend the book if you havent read. its okd, but it really illucidated the japanese mindset from a sociological as well as philosophical point of view. its not that they are devoid of “creativity”, but its that they have internalized the structures of their society so intensly and over such a long period with so little social upheaval that a type of strong completely naturalized traditionalism is engrained into the mind. it produces a wonderful sense of aesthetics and productive value. probably some nazi’s wet dream. the indivigual and the community is by an large synchronized. this is neither meant to be a admonishment or a praise btw.
