Even during their first encounter, he didn't save her, but gave her a sword instead. It's not really Casca's fault to be like that, due to her rough life, but people like that don't deserve love either. It's pretty obvious that she has a mediocre opinion of guts. No denying the 97 manga is excellent. The problem with the 97 manga, is that is stopped with the eclipse. How can you know about the rest of the story without reading the manga? The latest serie (2016) is a disgrace. I downloaded it, and couldn't even watch the first episode, due to very poor CGI. Most of the story post golden age is good. The arc with Mozgus is good, so is the arc with Ganisha. In between, there are pretty flat arc, like when they are on the sea, fighting sea monsters. But globally, it's still worth it. It's not like there are a lot of quality manga recently anyway. And it's good gnosis.

But even then it isn't a self contained story because we don't see what happens with Griffith after he becomes Femto.
