Is this about labor struggle with mining as a backdrop, or is it about mining with a labor struggle as a vehicle? The way Moby Dick is about whaling down to the very soul & texture, & has a revenge plot just to carry you through the illustration?

I want The Great Mining Novel, that explores man's relationship with the earth, trespassing below to steal coal and metal, but it seems like either this is it or it doesn't exist

Perfectly put anon, perfectly put. May God shine His wisdom upon you, that you may write it one day.

There's his signature, bottom right. Franklin something, I can't make it out.

You won’t get a lot of technical descriptions of mining in Germinal. Zola did extensively research it, in person, but the fact of the matter is that it is about ‘struggle’ in the practical and the abstract with mining as a backdrop. You do get a great sense of life in a company town during that era and of course there are many scenes going into and working in the mines, especially when Etienne is learning the ropes of the job but that isn’t the most important thing in the book.
