The sentence is hidden well enough among all the equations, footnotes and what not that I cannot even find it now and cite it precisely.

My edition of Buddenbrooks was published during USSR occupation. The preface was written by a communist ideological tool who criticizes Mann for failing to completely avoid the influence of the last century's decadent literature.
