As someone who's read the whole Western canon, Wikipedia can be a highly effective resource and generally offers suitable interpretations(and counterarguments).
A person who just read a Wikipedia even might have a better understanding of a text than someone who actually read it - often people misinterpret what they've read entirely.

The people who pretend like Wikipedia is not a decent resource sound as retarded as the teachers who criticized it also, not knowing most of the bullshit writing they praised me for in school was littered with citations of books I never read that I stole off Wikipedia.

Really though, if you care enough about something to argue about it - you should care enough to read it. You should care enough to check the Wikipedia to see if there is more to learn about it or things you've missed. Most people online just want to argue for the sake of arguing and have no desire to supplement their understanding, though.
