I don't blame social media. I blame smart phones. I deleted my social media too.

I think the problem is, that social media is bad, but smart phones have made it so accessible that it's become a societal level problem. When people can walk around with a box in their pocket that gives them immediate social gratification, it's just bad. As soon as you're in anything less than that socially gratifying situation, people whip out their smart phones for that dose of dopamine.

I was thinking, what if they just made people pay for social media? With addiction and moderation policies, how do you think they should go about that. Say, you were in a car accident because you were on Facebook or some other social media platform, and they were able to tell you were on it. Should you be court ordered to go to a Class like AA. Maybe Social Media Anonymous? And I also wanted to say one more thing, maybe it’s just a new technology and it won’t be for a while till people start handling it better.

She uses it while driving, cooking/eating dinner, while we watch a movie, before she falls asleep, as soon as she wakes up, it turns every day activities into hell. I told her how I felt about it and then broke up with her. She flipped out and started telling me “your 4chan is the same thing you hypocrite”. The endless barrage of useless content makes your brain dumb. The dopamine rush that you get from getting "likes" and having your followers grow will literally take a toll on your mental health and make your whole existance miserable. The happiness others try to convey on social media (which is, of course, fake) will make you feel like shit about yourself.

It's just not worth it. If you have friends, you can talk to them elsewhere. You can email them, you can give them a call. Being on social media really only makes you miserable and a sheep for companies to run you personalized ads. It's dumb.

4chan is not very ironic though. In fact it helped pioneer internet post-irony, in which it is impossible to tell and largely irrelevant whether a post is sincere or not. The entire idea of sincerity barely makes sense on a platform where the post could either honest or satire and there is no way to know. People constantly adopt positions on here it's clear they don't even know if they believe themselves, they're just arguing out the logic of some mental pathway. And when an anon probably is baiting it still doesn't matter, because other anons will just use the post as a pretext to talk about the subject sincerely, or vice versa.

The difference between 4Chan and Twitter/Facebook/Instagram is that the individual who uses those platforms is being part of an Algorithm by giving out their personal information. While using Chan, we don’t get sucked into these algorithms which help pop up Personal Ads Which manipulate and basically take away our free will you think for ourselves. On 4chan, it’s an anonymous image board where we are not looking for building a personal ego but have conversations about personal interests. People are puppets to social media, social media decides what you like/hate, how to dress, what to eat, how to feel, how to think. I don’t think the posters ITT understand the severity of the dangers of social media. The biggest problem isn’t “addiction” or anything like that. Social Media literally scrambles your brain and turns you into a surrogate-like pod person. All experiences only happen if they’re posted about on your social media. Your “friends” are just accounts from people you haven’t seen in the past decade. Everything that you think about is programming from the mass media, which has trickled down your news feed that day. All your thoughts and opinions resemble the hivemind. Not no mention, you live in the past, stalking profiles of your ex-gf and looking at high school crushes. It’s like a Funhouse. Get off Facebook.

>> No.15715700

OP here, and this is very well put! But, the addiction behavior is a real thing. People CAN NOT put their phones down for the life of them. It’s an issue.

>> No.15715714

The most practical reason to not use social media is personal safety. If you were using the internet in the 90s and early 2000s, you were undoubtedly told the following: DO NOT PUT ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION ONLINE. Don't say anything under your real name, don't post pictures of yourself, your friends, or your family, etc. etc. Anyone can read it and they can use it for nefarious purposes. But people have ignored this and now they're facing the consequences of it. Zoomers probably don't even know that people used to feel this way about the internet because they're grown up surrounded by this shit. THE INTERNET IS NOT A SAFE PLACE. Get it through your fucking head and behave appropriately.

There's several issues with social media but most major one is that it gives a platform to stupidity. It multiplies it. Dumb people don't deserve a voice. Take a gander at any social media, any comments section. It's as shocking as it is instructive. So many people are so wrong about so many things. And then you see all the likes! The only thing to be gained by social media is to help gauge how wrong everybody is about a particular topic. Twitter is particularly unsettling because the average poster there thinks they're smart. Angry stupid people can reach other angry stupid people all over the world and create a whirlpool of angry and stupid that sucks everything in and brings everyone down.

Is this a good read for someone that’s never used Twitter?

I have a friend that tells me I need to be anti-racist, and making an effort to make people hear black voices. Because where I live there’s literally no blacks (I’m not American), I should be retweeting black tweets. He couldn’t believe when I said I’ve never used twitter, and I’m contributing to white silence because I’m not on it.

Your friend has basically been indoctrinated by an internet cult. Don't be surprised if he cuts you out of his life before long. There's probably nothing you can do to help him.

When facebook came along I already had problems with too many commitments to family, friends, work colleagues etc and I was trying to get more solitude into my life. Facebook was promoted as a way to get in contact with old high school buddies yo haven't seen in years, etc. That was the last thing I wanted so I never bothered. Its not that I was supersmart or could see the future or anything I was trying to be antisocial.
Then when twitter came along that just seemed like an obvious timewaster so I passed on that too.
So I was just lucky I guess

Really, by you being on Chan you loss all free will to make decisions for yourself? I feel far from it. I have a sense of my own personal individuality. I have my own beliefs and morals. Im sure most non-social media users on chan have their own philosophies of life. Well, I would at least hope so. I like to have faith in humanity. Its not like every one on here believes in idiotic conspiracy theories or fall for flat earth like ideas.

I think the worst aspect of it is how it wrecks privacy & discretion in the social sense, totally notwithstanding the permanent record it furnishes for power-hungry glowies and corporate turbo-autist snoops. To some degree it makes everyone who uses social media a little bit more like a lol cow indiscriminately exposing their worst for all to see, while straining to pretend that doing so isn't destroying what peace of mind they have that enables reflection. In particular it ruins the development of social perception, the means by which we size others up from direct and unfiltered experience, of immediate comparisons between cognitive styles, manners, and conduct. Very little that is accurately telling is demonstrated by it, as a process, other than how to increase the severity of insanity where it already exists. It is a kind of gigantic caused accident perpetrated on the unwary.

I don't use Twitter and barely know the threading works but so far it is readable, albeit with a little bit of theory (Freud said this, Lacan said that, etc.). Some interesting insights into addiction and what it actually means (addicts are wanting the "wanting" as much as the dopamine hit) in a social context.

lol yea I really like memes too, fellow 4channer. I think "meme" autism is really funny and common, that's why I specify autism as "non-meme" autism when I'm talking about normal autism.
>It was an innocuous discussion about changes over time, nobody had accused anyone else of being a newfag
I'm accusing you of being newfags, because you can't realize the simple fact that you're a faggot for mentioning, however casually you think you did, that you've been here for x amount of time.

He has one reason to feel superior it's the fact that he's using anonymous social media and that's smart. So nobody (save maybe the FBI or glow niggers) can pin something he said in the past to his actual rl persona. So there's that.

I was always fond of 4chan's abandonment of ego. On Twitter, Facebook, Instagram you are battling for likes and you have a bias that an opinion is weak because it has little to no likes. Here we just voice opinions and besides number of replies on a thread/comment, it's largely a battle of ideas on topics of interest. Also, a lot of shit on this site (aka anime and porn) deter a lot of normies from being here, not full-proof but better than most platforms for sure.

>>15724001
It's what you make of it. I mostly go on /lit/ and find so many great books and ideas, its improved my personal character for sure. Other boards like /mu/ have shown me so much great music; specific /g/ threads have helped my career; /fit/ has helped me improve my workout routines/diet; /out/ has made me want to plan regular hikes/time in nature with friends/family. Other than that, I spend my free time working towards things I find important and seeing progress in it is incredibly fulfilling.
