Dead Souls and Moby Dick were both excellent.

Though as far as Nabokov's works go, Cold Fire is his best. I can't speak for anything Melville's written besides Moby Dick, but it was still a damn good story. I don't get why so many people spend hours puzzling over its meaning when it's pretty self-evident by the story's end.
