the original wasn't in english nor was it even in greek. think of word of a king. a king gives commands as words. these words express his will. a powerful king could have his will brought to fruition solely by his words, which is what God does in the creation story. The parallel between a king commanding his inferiors and God commanding the universe is even more obvious if you look at ancient Sumerian mythology. This is most likely what was meant by "word". Genesis is not an epistemology and you are just trying to force it into one.
