There is no definition. Lots of sources claim that Gen Z starts at '95 whereas others claim that it does not start until 2000. 1995 - 2000 is basically a transitional period between two extremely different generations, so it is rather dumb to group it with one or the other.

No, there is a definition, it's just self-hating Millennials like to self-segregate from the later part of the generation.

95 is still Gen Y. So is 96, 97, 98, 99. In fact, it was generally a consensus on 4chan that 2001 was considered the dividing year due to the cultural shift following 9/11. Strauss, who COINED THE FUCKING TERM MILLENNIAL, has it extending to 2004 -- and he's a better authority on the matter of generational dating than people on 4chan.

Personally, I put the dividing year as 99 since it's the final year prior to the turn of the Millennium -- Millennium, Millennial; makes sense to me -- thus, demarcating Gen Y being the last generation born prior to the new Millennium. '95 doesn't even make sense, in that regard. Which, again, brings me back to older Millennials wanting to separate from younger Millennials by cutting the generation shorter than is typical. I've yet to see this not being the case.

But, people will continue to erroneously use '95 as a cut-off year and it will never not be stupid to do so.

95'r here. I consider myself to be a late millennial/early zoomer who has characteristics of both. I think whether or not people born mid and late 90s identifiy more with millennial or zoomer culture depends on their personal persuasion. I grew up with an older brother (born 92) so I gravitated towards "older" entertainment like N64/Gamecube, 2000-2003 cartoons, ect. My friend was born 97 and has a younger sister, and is pretty much full on zoomer by comparison of myself who am more of an oldfag.

Wanna elaborate? I don'T want to see the past through rose tinted glasses, but I sure am glad I grew up in the 00s instead of now. The internet hadn't yet penetrated every nook and cranny of modern life. In the 00/10s decennium, we have seen considerable social dislocation originating in all things technology; from the now all too familiar always-on attention sink that is facebook/iPhone/insta, to thereby expedited depravities like onlyfans/e thotting. For a young person growing up, the world has become ocnsiderably more confusing. Wouldn't you agree?

A work that best captures this? Honest to fucking god in terms of cultural influence of what everyone was reading growing up it has to be Harry Potter. That is the cultural touchstone book for people my age, regardless of its quality.

Yeah agreed. I feel more millenial because i have older siblings who influenced by entertainment options. Also, Obama was president the entire time I was in high school - so those formative years were spent in a political climate where everything felt "OK". Climate change was a big topic of discussion, but there was no Greta and no school strikes. I think being a teenager in the age of Trump is pretty important context for the Zoomer/Millenial distinction. Millenials are defined by the GFC, Zoomers by Trump. If you are a mid-90s baby you're kinda in the middle. Anyway, everything in the OP image is super relatable though.

I'm from 93 and had a gateway when I was a kid that I played Rainbow Six Rogue Spear on. Facebook didn't become normal until I was 15 and I didn't have a facebook. The idea of youthful embarassment being permanant and social media being normal sounds like a horror show. I also had a pellet gun and went out catching snakes and turtles and got leeches between my toes. I think there is a reason zoomers are a bunch of dweeby mouthbreathers and it's because you didn't have the freedom to make any mistakes. You don't move at concerts. You're terrified because at any moment your shortcomings will be publicized by your peers. I feel sorry for you.
