It's better, but still sucks. The problem is that life is 'good' when you have the things you want and want little else. So life will still suck regardless, if some of the things you want are not related to your major. Other times things related to your major are so far off and unlikely to be reached, or academia itself makes it hard to reach them, that your life will still suck despite your major. Bottomline, life sucks almost always.

You could be an unemployable uneducated 24 year old during a worldwide pandemic and economic depression without hope for a career or university prospects.

Just do some technical cert and shift career paths. Publish a couple essays in local newspapers. Write a book or something. At least you aren't actively partitioned out of polite bourgeoisie society for being 'uneducated'.

With social media you can also usually find out the interests, hobbies, and personal opinions of prospective employers and mirror them. Everyone loves themselves, so if you remind them of them (without coming off as a threat, mind you) they will love you by extension. "No way, you like Hemingway too?
