I wonder this as well, but if you want a basic summary of facts type book then A Traveller's History of Scotland is decent, but skimps around the 1900s. Sorry, I can't help more, hopefully some kind anon will know of good books.

not really. all of them nearly always fail.
modern ones tend to not talk about history but instead speak about specific things, so like how a new axe style helped win a battle, while older ones tend to be filled with things that didn't happen.

it's best to read more in depth histories but if you want an overview by a decent writer check out Eric Linklater's The Survival of Scotland: A Review of Scottish History from Roman Times to the Present Day
