Buddhism is lame. Meditating all day and not furthering the glory of country and family. Lazy stoner ideology.

That's more 'Hollywood Buddhism' than anything else. Anybody who claims to be a Buddhist and smokes weed is probably full of shit and hasn't read a single sutta in their life. To answer OP, Buddhism has been co-opted by people with a leftist (or whatever you want to call it) mentality, and traditional Buddhism doesn't really exists in the US, which is where I am assuming you are from. I encourage you to read from the Pali canon first, as that is the most traditional school

I find it to be effeminate, bugmanite, onions-enriched, blasé and decadent. Typical of the twilight of a culture.

Better than every other major religion but ultimately still a religion and stoops to baseless dogma and superstition like the rest of them. It's frustrating because it gets close to the mark but doesn't hit it.

>"From whatever new points of view the Buddha's system is tested with reference to its probability, it gives way on all sides, like the walls of a well, dug in sandy soil. It has, in fact, no foundation whatever to rest upon and hence the attempts to use it as a guide in the practical concerns of life are mere folly. Moreover Buddha, by propounding the three mutually contradicting systems, teaching respectively the reality of the external world, the reality of ideas only and general nothingness, has himself made it clear that he was a man given to make incoherent assertions or else that hatred of all beings induced him to propound absurd doctrines by accepting which they would become thoroughly confused…Buddha’s doctrine has to be entirely disregarded by all those who have a regard for their own happiness."

The pali canon is like 5 books, some over 1000 pages long and very repetitive, so I don't recommend reading the whole canon. In the Buddha's Words: An Anthology of Discourses from the Pali Canon is the meme book I see recommended here sometimes and it's definitely good in my opinion. I'm sure you can find it online somewhere for free. After reading some foundational stuff I'm sure you'll be knowledgeable enough to avoid the Hollywood Buddhism I mentioned earlier. I haven't looked at zen Buddhism really but people meme about that too.

The Pali Canon is enormous. It is threefold and covers the teachings of the Buddha (Sutras), rules for monastic life (Vinaya), and autistic metaphysics (Abhidharma). You would probably benefit most from reading the Buddha's Middle Discourses and Long Discourses (two of the five Sutra collections containing sermons and doctrines). I would also encourage you to research Mahayana and not assume by default that Sri Lanka has the best 'preserved' authetic Buddhism, as Pali-only protestantizers tend to think

You can tell the character of Buddhism by looking at what kind of person is attracted to Buddhism even today. Nihilistic, last-man-ish, estrogen-infused, s-o-y-addicted, left-leaning numales. Birds of a feather...

Is it so superstitious to think one will suffer for his attachments, and that failing to overcome them will lead him to return to this world again just as easily as he was born to it? Conditioned experience constantly attempts to territorialize us and by undoing this process we can achieve a pure cessation of all cause and effect? True, this state is not conventionally knowable and requires faith in the teachings, but I would much sooner seek to be the agent of my own salvation than to prostrate before some unknown lawgiver who sets me up to fail.

Never read but that's more of a collection of brief lines than discourses right? The Pali canon mostly consist of suttas/sutras that read more like sermons than sayings

It's brief but ties together a lot of information otherwise spread through the canon. But the discourses aren't something to be read cover to cover either, they are episodic/encyclopedic in structure. Actually since the Dhammapada isn't in the Long or Middle Discourses you might as well start with it since as a survey it may help you reading other texts.
