Start with three things:
Read the greeks and egyptions, focus on mythology.
Start writing, blindly, anything at all. Draw as well, even if it's bad. Find an artistic medium that calls to you.
Embrace your inner madness. Talk to yourself about yourself, out loud. Explore your psyche, your insecurities, and the reasons your mind creates to answer questions you pose to yourself.
Next, find more esoteric things to read, and get in the habit of reading them. Easy targets are Jung, books describing psychology, books about religious rituals, and conspiracy/paranormal theory sites.
Next start performing rituals. The easiest and most primitive is sacrifice. Begin by making a goal, and sacrificing something to it. Continue making sacrifices until you reach this goal. Your sacrifice must be ritualized, it can be a crude ritual, but should require you to perform a sequence of deliberate actions taken at a specific place.
Once you have attained your first goal, meditate on the rituals you have used until this point. Your next goal will be distilling what you've learned to create a new ritual and find a source of power. You must find a god through which you draw and project power. You must establish your means of worship. You must ask what your god desires. You must find a way to sate these desires. This will be a difficult goal, and will require you to combine the old knowledge with the rituals you used to achieve your first goal.
Once you have found your power, you must use it. At this point, those around you will either notice you have changed, or you will be isolated. Either way, your next goal is to find an apprentice to initiate into your ways. Your ways will not be set, only in teaching an apprentice in your rituals will you be able to gain further power. You will probably go through multiple people and some of them will be failures, but that is fine. It is how you will grow. At this point you are no longer a slave to the larger society, you will be able to survive without its approval, use the society freely, but don't bend to it if you will gain nothing from it. You will be able to find a place to rest, a place to learn, and if necessary a place to preach wherever there are people, simply tell them what you require and you will eventually find it. Confidence is key at this point, you will find confidence in your rituals.
If you follow these steps, you will be on the path of controlling a group of the weak, of teaching the open, of controlling yourself. But do not believe you are free, you are forever a slave, but a slave to a master you chose, above the common cattle.

It's assumed you don't have a foundation in anything because you've given no context for what you've read and are posting 7 year old /pol/ pill infographics. You'll probably want to read some neoplatonists like Plotinus before you get into Gnostic texts like the Nag Hammadi. The Kybalion and Corpus Hermeticum are decent start points otherwise, though. And as far as contemporary stuff goes you could look into O9A but without some kind of grounding you're going to end up an edgelord larper.

Ben Sira's texts (you won't find some of these anymore like the 2nd alphabet). You'll need to read up a bunch on The Cave of the Nymphs and bulls and the sun. Pick up pre 20th century symbology books. Read The Secret Doctrine but take it with a huge grain of salt. Pick up all of Liber Legis you can get your hands on and early Crowley. You need to read these with the understanding that Crowley is actively trying to fuck with people and is sort of teetering between post-irony and irony. Familiarize yourself with early Indo-European theology. There's a bunch of groundwork to do and once you've read all of it you won't get it. I'm not a know it all. I've said very little on this thread. And I'm quite willing to accept new information. As mentioned, I'm a Catholic and yet I am seeking to learn about esoteric matters, not necessarily Christian, such as Egyptian. Well, it's the truth, which is why you are so angry. Pagan thinkers include Plato and Aristotle and Plotinus. Or perhaps even Catholicism's Pagan elements, which were all very much emphasized by Ficino. Of course he was a Platonist as well as a Catholic. Crowley is neither.

I'm just looking for legitimate thinkers and esoteric spiritual sources and Crowley does not fit my criteria.

You're looking for people to reinforce your pre-established view of the world. I don't even care that much about Crowley and he was a small part of my original recommendation but your immediate dismissal of his writings as "edgy" clearly shows that you are incapable of venturing into this field of literature. You know nothing about him, yet parade yourself around as if you know enough to write him off entirely. You are an absolute moron and you probably shouldn't even bother reading anything at all.

Well, I am also exploring the Vedas, which are very different from anything I'm used to. So, you're quite wrong -- again! I have to immediately dismissed Crowley at this time because he isn't terribly interesting nor will permit me to obtain worthwhile insight into esoteric matters. Information on this one is fairly sparse and found in bits and pieces. If I recall correctly essays touching on the cave of the nymphs should refer to this. It has origins as Cronus and Mithra and can be found referenced in a lot of Greco-Romanic art and statues. I think it's referenced in the Gathas as well. Read this a long time ago so I'm having a bit of trouble recalling. Will go through my library when I get the chance. Very little information exists on this but it references the immortality of the primordial ancestor through the undying son/sun. Sol Invictus is inheriting more than Cronus' dagger, he is inheriting his likeness in it's purest form as the raw violent sun.

When I recognized them, I asked him about them and all he said was "I don't know what you're talking about". He never wore them again at work and we never brought it up again till a couple years after he took me aside and we talked about it.

Wouldn't walking into occultism require more mental strength? For what it's worth, I don't plan on ever trying anything. It's just kind of cool to look at.

Beelzebub is fine to just pick up. He has plenty to offer in the way of self development if you can smile past his musings about magic numbers. Eliphas Levi and Bergson probably also have some keys to the universe. Henry Miller credited Bergson with like exploding his mind or something, apparently Miller would read Bergson to a bunch of Jews back in the day and they are all calling him based and shit. Creative Evolution is dense as FUCK though. I got filtered hard.

A lot of Crowley is satirical though. He veils a lot of his writings behind an ironic veneer. Doesn't mean he doesn't know his stuff. There are points within his writing where he's just trying to mess with the people who don't see the real message.

Carlos Castaneda - just start with the first three.

Aliester Crowley - Magick Without Tears

I'd also read The Masks of God series concurrently for background and Jung articles.

As a complete outsider to "magic" qua magic, but as a lit, philo, and theo student, start with:

>Presocratics, Plato, Greco-Roman mythology, and Greco-Roman poetry.
Buy a presocratics reader and just go through it. The ideas of Heraclitus and Parmenides are most important - they represent two sides of Plato's metaphysical synthesis. I've read most of Plato, Hesiod, and Horace. Working my way through other Latin guys rn. Plato in the Parmenides, Theatetus, and Timaeus is INSTRUMENTAL for:

understanding NeoPlatonism:
>Plotinus, Introduction to Proclus, Mysteries of Iamblichus
Iamblichus and Proclus build on Plotinus' mystical take on Plato. They create what is essentially a magical system ordered towards union with the Godhead. In the greek, this is henosis. These rituals are built on ancient pagan practices. If there's any legitimate magic in the world, it lies here imo. These guys carry on the tradition of the Orphics and the Pythagoreans - arguably some of the first western mystery cults w/ the first "magical" practices.

For the Judeo-Christian intersection:
>Old testament: Canon, apocrypha, pseudepigrapha. New Testament: the gospels.
These are preconditional to understanding mystic christian thinking, the Gospel of John especially. The influence of the Greek "Logos" is big here, especially in John. The Old Testament / New Testament correspondence of Christ to lady Wisdom (Book of Proverbs) intersects with the Greek Sophia. (a la philosophy, philo-sophia). Read Enoch if you want more metaphysical bullshit, but its spurious.

Mystical works:
>Dionysus the Areopogite (letters, divine names, mystical theology)
>Mani's works
>Gnostic literature (Pistis Sophia, Gospel of Thomas, etc.)
These deadass pull almost directly from Plato, especially in their emphasis on the Demiurge.

None of this is "magical" per se. What I can speak to here, however, is literature that attempts to elevate the spirit and unify one with the divine, which I would consider a kind of magic. I've perused the Corpus Hermeticum, which people like Crowley build on, and to be quite honest it's literally dressed up Plato. I'll add a bit more in my next post.

For medieval mysticism:
>Hildegard of Bingen
>Julian of Norwich
>Jakob Böhme
>Teresa of Avila
>Dante
>Eckhart
Again, none of this is "magical" in the sense of casting spells. If you want to read about people who claimed to experience the Divine Absolute firsthand, though, these are the people you want.

Less than reputable medieval "magic" texts I've often encountered are as follows:
>The Zohar - work of medieval Kabbalah
>the Picatrix - an islamic grimoire
>the Keys of Solomon - allegedly "ancient" grimoires attributed to King Solomon, likely bullshit

Other specifically "occult" magical practices derive from other people mentioned here, who build on the aforesaid medieval works:
>Cornelius Agrippa
>Paracelsus
>John Dee
>Crowley
>Blavatsky
>Gurdjieff

I can't speak to any of this per se, as I haven't read any of it. From what I can tell, the Jungian interpretation (also given here) that the signs and codices are "latent" with psychological meaning strikes me as kinda bullshit. Why not just read the clearer ancient literature from which this later symbolism was derived?

As a side note, Mary Shelley shits all over these types in Frankenstein so, clearly this kind of esoterica and skepticism thereof has been around for a while. I dunno though, Gurdjieff seems decent, though even he has miserably mixed reviews.

Other people and things you may want to check out:
>Jiddu Krishnamurti
>Rudolph Steiner
>Tantric yoga
>Antoine LaVey

Ye, Behmen is the same person.

Concerning LaVey though, I dunno, he's someone I've heard a bit about who seemed to do something different with spirituality. Like most modern thinkers, he's more of a curiosity piece to me than anything else. Everything above the medieval "magic" section is what I'd look into first and foremost. Everything below it scores high on my bullshit-detector, except Tantric yoga and Krishnamurti.

I'm not kidding when I say he's a plagiarist either. Most likely if you've read some of "his" writing you've liked, it was plagiarized. Stole from everyone from HP Blavatsky to Ragnar Redbeard. Word for word. Didn't even bother paraphrasing or anything.

Don't worry, people who study it don't really understand it either. Suffice to say absolutely anything you can ever learn from Qabbalah you'll already get from everything already suggested as its heavily influenced from Neoplatonism. It's just so needlessly pompous and verbose that it looks more important than it really is. That and the fact that the people who created it lied about absolutely everything about themselves. They even try to say that their tradition taught Pythagoras and Plato.

Start with shamanic texts and the first book of the Masks of God on ancient and tribal religions.

If you're the type of person who has their preferences programmed into them by infographics on a siamese etching website, there is zero chance you will understand anything about what you are going to read. If you don't understand why you need to have read the Greeks, then you are not going to understand literally anything you read that requires a modicum of critical thinking and introspection on your part.

There is a reason why esotericism is esoteric - to stop people like you from getting into it. Stop trying to derive your identity from the internet and go outside, and give it another go in 10 years

99% of occultism is LARP. Don't bother reading any books. Forget about ancient Greeks and Egyptians, they're all stupid niggers. Organized religions are retarded. Esoteric movements and organizations are all LARPers. If you want the real occult learn to interact with the non-physical world (i.e. learn to project your consciousness out of your body at will, but do it properly -there's a lot of misinformation in this area because of said LARPers). Only then does it really begin.

I have a fun story similar to this. A foreign friend of mine saw my odd ways and opinions (I was considering having myself cyrogenically frozen on my deathbed) and thought I was a member of his occultist group. He sent me a strange symbol and asked me if I had ever seen it, and when I reverse-image searched it, it led only to one website which was locked behind a paywall. I said I had never seen it but mentioned that I found the website—he commended me on my initiative and said that if I continued, I should send his regards to a man named Nemo.

I had little interest, but my friend who posts on /x/ insisted that I check it out. Apparently, it's an organization called the Cult of the Vampire and it seems to merely be a fund-raising front for the Satanic Church. I have no intention of spending real money to access to website, though.

Oh well. I guess this is what happens when you talk to strange Swedish men on ASMR discord servers.

Pro tip: if you aren't actively living a Christian life, confessing your sins, praying, and going to church, Christian mysticism is not for you. If you are trying to get into mysticism, esotericism, or the like as an object of curiosity, to gain power, or to receive things you desire, you are on the wrong path.
