Hello /lit/. What do you use to protect your books you carry around?

I borrow paperback books for my bus commute, and I keep the book in my bag while I'm walking around.

Well my bag is sort of pouch-shaped and the corners of the books are starting to curl, and something in my bag even ripped the back cover a little bit. I wouldn't find this acceptable even with my own books, let alone a library book.

What can I do? I don't fancy my 3-hour daily commute without a good book, but I don't want to ruin any books.

Also, I'm not even sure what might help. Some type of case to keep them in while they're in my bag? dunno...

Sandwich bags? But the shape of them would do the same thing to book corners that my bag does. Just fresher.

Seriously, go get some of the thick, clear packing tape. Cut and place it along the edges. It's stout enough that the corners won't bend.

This is what paperbacks are made for. If you want a book to last forever get a more permanent edition and keep it in your "library."

Adds character, makes you look like a boss because it appears you've actually READ the book. Man up!

A messenger bag? I take the bus and usually throw one smart book and one easy book in there (ie Chomsky + Catch 22 or something)

I like it when books get a little old: pages creased and turning a slight cream colour, the edges of the cover torn and frayed slightly.

However, I don't damage books too much - except I have trouble with pages falling out from time to time or the spine breaking. But I carry them around in my hands or in my bag and they're pretty well protected.

A few years ago I was getting pissed that my books would get ruined in my backpack. I buy used books, and I like to keep books in good condition.

I picked this plastic carrier up for like $4 and it works perfectly.

Surely your library reinforces their books?

I try to get hardcovers, which makes this a simple matter of not taking the dust jacket with you. Otherwise, I guess a small plastic bag inside your normal bag.

I'd say lose this attitude that a book is some kind of special holy object, and forget about it. If I finish a paperback or whatever on a bus, I leave it there for someone else to read, so why should I give a fuck if it's a bit foxed?

I have a leather/plastic-ish cover for my books. It's not that handy though, because only some books fit. It's very similar to the one in the image. The feel of the cover is fantastic, and it really keeps your book preserved.
Although, books have to be read. And I like well-read, thumbed-through books more than brand new ones. It gives that ancient feel of epic.

That false, ancient feel of epic? Oh, okay, cool.
