There's no reason to think either hamlet or macbeth are insane. They're both pretty stressed but sane.

Oh no you're right - walking around seeing imaginary daggers in front of yourself and imagining that your dead mate that you just clipped is showing up randomly for dinner, that's just a bit of work related stress - tough job being a king.

And Hamlet is clearly suicidal and depressive. Polonius claims he's melancholic, and there's evidence throughout the play that the other characters find him a little bit "challenging"

Hamlet:
Slanders, sir; for the satirical rogue says here that old men
have grey beards, that their faces are wrinkled, their eyes purging
thick amber and plum-tree gum, and that they have a plentiful
lack of wit, together with most weak hams; all which, sir, though
I most powerfully and potently believe, yet I hold it not honesty
to have it thus set down, for yourself, sir, shall grow old as I am, if
like a crab you could go backward.

Polonius:
[Aside] Though this be madness, yet there is method in't.

As a final point, what would you do if one of your friends jumped into an open grave and started doing a ventriloquist act with the skull of one of his old mates? How mental do you have to be in your world before someone says "Hey, he's mad that guy"?

Oh yeah, madness. That old man and the Sea bloke, the old man. He's pretty mental, and that is definitely a fish. No chips are ever mentioned, but perhaps the sharks have some when they eat the fish. Hemingway may have chosen to edit that bit out.

What about this bitch? She look like a motherfucking fish to you? Yo Brah, I'm a fish too, just like a whale.

Another famous mad person of literature is Esther Greenwood in The Bell Jar, and Sylvia Plath killed herself after she finished it, so she probably had some insight into depressive madness.

Oh, and Humbert Humbert is a paedophile - is that a kind of madness?

There are some pretty good arguments for eating whale, actually - and not all species are endangered. For a food-kill ratio, it's hard to find a better animal. You kill one whalex feed a thousand people. Kill a thousand shrimp, feed one or two people. It's actually more ethical in many ways. And no part of a whale gets wasted. If you've ever been near a fishery, you get sick of all the heads and tails and fins just lying around on the beaches feeding the crabs.
