15581912 No.15581912 [Reply] [Original]

It is time.

>There is nothing historically unusual about all this. We are just living in a total state. Nor is this new—it has been true our whole lives. It is just getting harder to hide.

>In a total state, everyone and everything is infused with power. Everyone matters. Everything is important. Everyone has to care. Everyone wants to change the world. Everyone must be engaged. Everyone is pushing power forward, or pushing back against it. Everyone is either a collaborator or a dissident. Power has turned the whole country into a political cult.

>Anyone who reads Vaclav Havel's Power of the Powerless will be struck by Havel's portrait of Czechoslovakia forty years ago—with its voluntary window-slogans; its endless parade of crusades; its inexorable machinery of human cancellation.

>Havel had the right strategy for the subjects of the total state. First, they must teach themselves to be powerless. They must fully inhabit their private irrelevance. Above all, they must stop trying to change the world.

So how the fuck does the monthly subscription work? It doesn't give you an option of how long you want to stay subscribed, or explain how to cancel it. It looks identical to buying the full year sub except $20 more expensive

Some of his ideas are interesting in a macro sense but he's a dogshit writer (as well as an even worse speaker) and he never really gets into the detail of how any of this shit could be put into practice. We'll see how his new book fares but as it stands, like other meme writers in his circle (Land, BAP, etc.), he's really only useful as a springboard for discussion and inquiry, rather than a source of anything substantial or coherent.

Brownpill me on Moldbug's thought. I assume that list is complementary to his ideas? I have read Inventing the Individual, a book I was attracted to because of my belief that liberalism is an automatic predetermined creation of the Christian worldview. This is the case that Siedentop makes. I know that Moldbug is an atheist and doesn't think a person's spiritual beliefs can impact the real world which is something I 100% disagree with and is directly at odds with Inventing the Individual.

>> No.15584256

those books have nothing to do with Moldbug. Moldbug's own recommended reading is stuff like Carlyle's political essays, Froude's Bow of Ulysses, HS Maine's Popular Government, de Jouvenel on Power, etc.

The only reason I'm even considering subscribing is to get the signed book, and would definitely cancel the subscription after June if I knew I could have do it for one month to get it. But it's unclear how long you need to sub for to get the book and/or if you can easily cancel the sub

On Power by Bertrand De Jouvenel has to be the most important out of the lot he recommended imo
its funny though that in his Frenchness, De Jouvenel ends up deconstructing the very liberalism he's trying to promote instead of the liberalism he sees as a product of Power centralisation

ironically slavoj zizek of all people has argued something similar, that the great inactivity of citizen is an omen of great forboding for late capitalism and that's why there's so much pressure to get involved (voting, donating to charitable causes, being an ethical consumer, protesting, etc). this is also analagous to spengler talking about how the roman plebians would send one token representative to vote just decades after fighting and dying to win the right to do so

Nah. Read Ellul.

"What is needed, then, is continuous agitation produced artificially even when nothing in the events of the day justifies or arouses excitement. Therefore, continuing propaganda must slowly create a climate first, and then prevent the individual from noticing a particular propaganda operation in contrast to ordinary daily events."
