Sometimes I can feel the Shakespeare vibe :

"The First Flame quickly fades.
Darkness will shortly settle.
But one day, tiny flames will dance across the darkness.
Like embers, linked by lords past."

Is it actually good? The House on the Borderland was very disappointing.

At first I disagreed with this. But now it makes perfect sense.

The worldbuilding is what marks the greatest achievement of the work, and the world hits the same thematic notes as Dark Souls does.
The story, on the other hand, is awful–not even half-decent.
But honestly, the same goes for Dark Souls. The worldbuilding is what makes the games great, the story is a bit better than that of The Night Land, but still, I wouldn't go praising Dark Souls for its storytelling. And I'm a big fan of the series, Demon Souls and Dark Souls being my favourite entries.

Yes and no, it's painfully dull and the prose is weird as fuck. But the world, the monsters, the uncanny strange shits, everything else is great. It's a bad story in a great world.

I'm not familiar with the differences of the abridged version having only read the unabridged one myself.
Can't help you there.

Yes, but when I imagine a book that fits I imagine an abstruse book in which you have to dig enought to understand the shit

It seems to be primarily based on Norse Eddas, which is obtusely written, centeree around cataclysmic
events, void of dramatics and emotion and down to the way the characters speak to one another. The way various characters are punished like the Witch of Izalith is reminiscent of Greek mythology.
