Also, wondering why Tolkien called Gollum Gollum and if it has anything to do with saunas. Jewish folklore and stuff.

Possibly so, which would be why Mordor was so hot and had the Crack of Doom. It's an interesting hypothesis, but more evidence would be required.

Read "The Golem" by Gustav Meyrink for qabalistic mysteries and a good read.

>why Tolkien called Gollum Gollum and if it has anything to do with saunas
Yes. As a Finn, let me tell you of of this traditional game that was invented in the medieval Finnish sauna.

SaunaGollum is a club game for athletes of all ages and hairs, requiring at least two players, but can accommodate as many people as can be fitted in the sauna. The last player who enters the sauna is called Gollum, and that person crawls to their cave under the boards. Others sit on the boards and the game can start. Gollum's mission is to make other players bounce by tickling their asses between the boards. If one of the players bounces, they will become the new Gollum and the former Gollum will sit on the boards.

The advantages of the game are its flexibility: there are no limitations on the number of players and the game can continue as long as you want. In addition, if the sauna is exceptionally large, the transfer of several Gollums to the cave can alleviate the crowd on the benches. However, the game also has its drawbacks: it can only be played in the sauna, and there must be a Gollum cave beneath the boards. Among other things, Euffa's sauna is not very suitable for a saunaGollum. Many saunas, however, have this kind of cave, and so often at the end of the sauna , we can hear a reverberation of the sound of giggling and the screams of the joy from the showers.

Because of the compulsive gulping sound he makes. It's not remotely related to golems.

That's the explanation given in the book, it's not the same as the reason or inspiration for the name that the author came up with.

Is that a Finnish idiom? It's quite interesting.

It is. I don't know the origin of it, but it is a bit of a weird one. Mostly I see it used within pet communities, like dog breeders and such, where it makes more sense.

>sitting in a steam sauna
>old man opposite of me gives me a piercing look
>"So you got them too" he says
>"What?"
>"Chain balls"
>realize immediately what's going on
>grab my balls and start swinging my half-meter long nutsack like a weapon
>old man does the same
>circle each other ready to strike
>start hitting each other like crazed monkeys with our nutsacks as weapons
>end up retreating first because my balls start to hurt, leave the sauna
Those geezers are real fucking tough at chain ball duels, their calcified balls probably have no feeling left in them.
