Start with Borges's famous short story "¿El café es bueno para ti?"

>> No.15518805

Start with Borges.
If you liked the short stories, continue with Quiroga, Cortázar, Arreola and Rulfo. If you liked the poetry, follow Darío, Paz, Neruda and Cardenal. Bolaño is a wildcard. Vargas Llosa before the Nobel is a must, too

Search for a book of mexican poetry translated by Samuel Beckett, it is pretty good. If you like fucked up shit, read "El Obsceno Pájaro de la Noche" by Donoso.

The Meme Trilogy is 2666, Paradiso and Terra Nostra.

Also, great pair.

my favorites yet:
Miguel Angel Astúrias (Guatemala)
Gabriel García Márquez (Colombia)
Graciliano Ramos (Brazil)

haven't read in a while, where should i start, vros: Borges, Cortazar or Bolaño?

>> No.15518919

>>15518828
Yes, good short stories here and there. Borges recommended the collection Varia invención.

>> No.15518928

>>15518890
Borges was good at everything. Short stories, poems, essays. Cortázar was only good at short stories (early-to-mid collections being the best) and novels. Bolaño wrote good novels, mediocre short stories, and terrible poetry. Borges is the best choice.

>> No.15518999

>>15517870
savage detectives is way more digestible I'd start with that rather than 2666

>> No.15519034

>>15518999
Savage Detectives gets a bit too dense in the middle and is 600+ pages. Distant Star is both good and short (150+ pages). I'd start with that.

>> No.15519491

>>15518928
That's funny because Bolaño is a good poet but a bad novelist.

>> No.15519506

>>15519491
Other way aound, actually. His poetry is utter shit. Like a Bukowski or Parra wannabe.

>> No.15520236

>>15518928
Why would you call his short stories "mediocre", may I ask? Sure, they may be worse than his novels, but I'd say they are far from mediocre.

>> No.15520272

>>15520236
He has three or four good ones in his entire bibliography. The rest are mediocre, so it's fair to say most are mediocre. I would call him decent but considering other short story writers that I've read he's not decent but mediocre.

Don't start with Octavio Paz for mexican lit. Everyone should start with Juan Rulfo, the father of mexican letters.
Check out No one will see me cry and get into contemporary latinoamerican lit too.
