Do you smoke /lit/? If not, does it bother you to have no referent for that experience shared by the majority of authors and characters 1500-2000?

Smoking tobacco is disgusting. You smell like shit to everyone around you.

If you've never smoked or haven't smoked for a long time, this is true, but obviously this begs the question of how anyone can enjoy smoking. The answer is that if you smoke long enough, then you get some satisfaction out of getting your fix.

>> No.15506741

I recently started pipe smoking, something I naively assumed was an entirely different from cigars and other harsher-smelling (secondhand) tobaccos. I found it very similar to a cigar, but with a lot more cleanup. I can see how the ritual of packing, smoking and cleaning a pipe would appeal to some people over other tobacco products, but it now seems to me that it would frequently be a practical thing to have if it were easier to buy loose tobacco than something mass-produced.

I don't agree. You don't get a sense of what smoking means to someone off of the first puff. You don't get anything like the full experience, and also miss all the tangential ones; comparing different brands, taking breaks for the express purpose of smoking, breaking down your pack into days (or vice versa). I'm not saying that's necessarily that valuable, just that it's not contained in the first puff, and difficult to really understand secondhand.

>>15506764
Not at all what I'm suggesting. Obviously there are lots of good reasons not to smoke. It's just something that was kind of a universal habit for hundreds of years, and is still relatively accessible. I guess your answer would be "no it doesn't bother me"

That's interesting. I have the same problem with both, but for a shorter duration. Something really surprised me though was how long facial hair holds on to pipe smoke, which smells much nicer. I smoked for fucking 13 years, I know damn well why people smoke and it's not due to taste. Sure you will have tobacc which tastes better or worse and cope into being a gourmet of sorts doing it for the quality, but in the end you smoke to socialize due to shitty soft skills (it works), social pressure, false ideas about copying the coolness and after a while due to dependance.

Well, this post marks the point where the word "reddit" on 4chan has lost its meaning entirely. I mean, if "smoking" is reddit, why stop there? How about being left-handed, or cutting sandwiches diagonally, or tying your shoe laces? Is that reddit too? Is it possible that people who make these posts just assume "reddit" means "bad" so they use it when their deficient brain can't think of another word? Really, dumbass? Smoking of all things is "the most reddit thing in existence". Not White middle class self-flagellation; not spouting anti-Trump pro-Sanders soundbites; not circlejerking over progressive ideas, Star Wars, video games, and Black people; not homing terrible memes, repetitive jokes, and confirmation bias. An obvious lack of knowing the dangers as well as it being a social standard, as everybody smoked in polite company make it a completely different practice. You smoked as a 8 yo workig in a mine to cope with the hard life. Nobody in the west needs that cope working in a climate controlled office. Todays it's social inabilities which lead people to copy the haard guys from the past (be it smoking, having a long beard, wearing [insert cool movie character] cloths).

Great minds of the past were smoking because that's what practically every man of their time did. Just like the alcohol connsumption at work till the 1960s. But times change and if you drink at work in 2020 you're not one of the guys but an dependant alcoholic which can't deal with lifes shit.

We can't judge the past by our standard, but we can learn from it.

Smoking tobacco is the most NPC thing ever because the drug doesn't even make a interesting thing, you only do it because you socially edgy, admit it. While you think it's edgy in the USA, in France there are tons smoking little the bunch of NPCs they are. Smoking or not smoking is NPC, it depends on your values for doing so.
I can't stand dumb teenage smokers who think they're edgy and counter-culture for doing something that was the norm for ages and still is in some places.

There's definitely some aesthetic value in it, sure, but I think a lot of that value is lost once you become a smoker yourself, or just grow up in general. Most of the allure comes from the 'danger' or 'adultness' of it when you're a teenager and still see it as a grown up or taboo activity. Once you become an adult and/or smoker the mystery of it dies and you see it for what it is, just a habit that's somewhat pleasurable.
The aesthetic value is also completely canceled out by the health risks especially once you're actually putting your own health at risk. Very few people are going to sacrifice their health as an adult just to look cool, especially when the aesthetic value is minimal. The only reason most people continue to smoke is because of the pleasure/habit.
That too, if I'm interpreting what you're saying correctly, though I'm not sure I am, you might need to elaborate. The fact that people are going to think you're just doing it for aesthetics does completely cancel out the aesthetic value and can have the opposite effect. Speaking from my own experience I actually hate smoking in public for that reason, among many others. A good ciggy is best enjoyed in solitude.

Smoke is mystical, the shapes it forms before the wisps disappear into thin air. The Lakota and many other Indians believe the kinnick-kinnick smoke carries their prayers to Wakan Tanka. To them, smoking is a gift given to them to communicate with the spirits.
Really though, I love nicotine. Those shitty ads go on about how a Juul has the same nicotine as a pack of cigarettes or some shit like nicotine is a caustic poison. It's striking how many people drink 400mg of caffeine daily yet believe that nicotine will kill you with lung cancer.
I only occasionally smoke tobacco and never cigarettes, which taste and smell awful. I used to dip but snus is much easier and less of a mess. Don't even bother with the nicotine puches they've come out with. Vaping is a delight and I'm saddened that the media has mislead everyone with such fear-mongering. It specifically affects the way I understand someone in a book or poem smoking. I can better guess what feeling someone is having when they decide to pack a pipe, or use a cigarette as an excuse to get some air. It's not revolutionary, it just means I can relate to them in a way I couldn't before. Like being drunk, or getting punched, or having sex. They're all different for different people, but they're also very different than what you imagined before you had been through it.

I think that nonsmokers have way more of a complex than smokers. They have the audacity to use legislature to ban smoking nearly everywhere. Where I'm from it's illegal to smoke anywhere that's got at least 3 walls and a roof, and you gotta be at least 5 meters from a building. Every fucking building hast at least 3 walls and there are building every couple feet for fucks sake. Can't even have a smokers only bar.

the average nonsmoker complex is born from this, they see not smoking as a sacrifice and get mad when other people don't comply with them, especially b/c it seems like a good time (even though its the shittiest high). its the same reason people like to instant karma videos, they enjoy the group reinforcing itself via punishment

It's just something I've heard repeated a lot, I don't know what the actual numbers are. Personally I get a very Puritan vibe from the whole anti-smoking thing, but I do understand that being around smoke just annoys some people a lot.

Smoked it at home that night, and thought that it was pleasant and relaxing. I started having a cigar every now and then (maybe once every few months; was never a big smoker) just because it was nice and I enjoyed the experience. Switched to a pipe (first a corncob, and now a cheap hardwood), and smoke a small bowl of tobacco maybe once or twice a month, again just because it's a pleasant thing to do.

Don't think that this has been the result of peer pressure, commercial conditioning, a lack of personality, or circumventing soft skills, especially given that I generally smoke by myself and not with others.
