Could /lit/ recommend some great horror books, and I mean books that disturbed you on a deeper level, which caused you nightmares, I would ask /x/ but...I don't trust them with literature

I would NEVER recommend any lovecraft books, he had great ideas but he executed them poorly with terrible writing. He's truly overrated too

i thought the same, but one night after I've read Call of Cthulhu, I had a nightmare with the very Cthulhu as the main source of dread
so, apparently, he wasn't that good writer, but he'll disturb you sooner or later

Books that have made me feel disturbed on a deep level are not necessarily horror books. I will list the books that have disturbed me, but try to stick to a definition of "disturbed" that means there was an element of fear involved, because that is what I think you are after:

1. Jurassic Park
2. Blood Meridian
3. Various works by Lovecraft
4. The Violent Bear it Away
5. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

Hmmmm. I might not be the best one to ask. I guess weird things scare me.

He wants to be disturbed, as much as I love Lovecraft, and I do love his work, he's not a disturbing writer.
Marquis De Sade.

The only Lovecraft stories which have affected me deeply, like the op describes, would be Rats in the Walls and The Outsider

The only problem with Rats in the Walls is Nigger-Man (Why, Lovecraft, why?)

House on the Borderland by William Hodgeson
Surfacing by Margaret Atwood
Bag of Bones by Stephen King
House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski
The Sheep Look Up by John Brunner
Pump Six and Other Stories by Paolo Bacigalupi
A lot of the stories in Harlan Ellison's Dangerous Visions compilation.

These are the ones I can name off the top of my head lingered in my mind for quite some time after reading.
