If you’re not compressing your poetry for more compact storage, what the fuck are you even doing?

Do people read poetry? I thought it was gay back when I was in school but that might just have been peer pressure.

At a beginner's level you should really read as widely as possible to get a feel for different poets, then stick to one you like. Get a short poem from a bunch of poets Classical and Modernist, even translated ones (ignore those language purist goons), and cull a list of poets you want to explore. Then expand from there. Try writing your own poems in varied forms too.

they could be using poetry data compression techniques to enhance their stories

still the soul of poetry is to triangulate an idea by activating multiple associated neurons in an exotic way.

There isn’t really a general best poetry “for beginners.” What kind of poetry you’ll like depends on your own personal tastes. I’d recommend just finding one poet you like, and then reading the poets who influenced them.
Some ideas to start with: Bukowski, Ginsberg, Whitman, Frost, Cummings. I’m not saying these poets were all equally great, but they we’re at least entry points for me into poetry.

If you share some of your favorite books, songs, paintings, or whatever, in sure I could give more of a personalized recommendation.

Cool idea, but why would you need compact storage for poetry? Ideally, poems should be printed in large text set in wide margins on large sheets of paper or scrolls. Cramming everything onto a notecard ruins the aesthetic appeal.

This is ugly and part of poetry is the actual way the poem is shaped. You're just ruining the art. This is something a retarded anti-aesthete would do. You don't deserve to read poetry, go back to prose, plotfag.

I sort of want to start reading poetry but is there a handbook or guide I should read to understand poetry better or is it better to just dive into it. And by that I mean I dont't understand meter or measure or those sorts of things.

Pic related is a good intro.

It also might be good for you to just read through a relatively short but comprehensive anthology of poetry. Louis Simpson’s “An Introduction to Poetry” isn’t bad for this—plus, it has a few essays on poetry as well in it.

Allen Ginsberg also has a ton of lectures on archive.org. Some are more centered around writing poetry, but if you listen to some of his “Basic Poetics” course, that might give you a decent foundation.

Best of luck.
