I can power through shit if it's light reading. If I'm sincerely interested in what the author is saying, you can bet your ass I'm going to be taking frequent breaks to turn my eyes off and just think. You can be broadly read or you can be well read, only very rarely approaching both simultaneously.

It all depends on what you’re reading, if it’s a Stephen king novel then 250 pages an hour is reasonable, but if it’s the work of great minds like Plato, Aristotle, Nietzsche, then yes, 100 pages per hour is more like it. Anything below this and you should reconsider your life choices.

If a book is great, why the fuck would you want to rush through it? If I like a book I usually try to embrace every word and get lost in the whole thing a bit. This means that I read like 15-20 pages an hour. Also english is not my first language, but I read most books in english (as it’s easier to pirate e-books in english), probably this too slows me down. Am I doing something wrong?

I've read some books at 100+ pages per hour (relatively uncomplicated fiction). I'm currently reading The Technological Society at around 10 or so pages per hour because it's dense and I have to spend a lot of time rereading or referring to my notes or to earlier sections to make sure I'm understanding everything. The truly retarded thing would be to read a book at a speed that's inappropriate for adequately understanding the material.

Wrong with what? I dunno, but I do that too. Sometimes I literally stop reading something to "feel the flavor" a bit more. You can probably start doing that.

You comprehend and soak in the book much better when reading at a slower pace. Reading 50 pages while understanding most of it > reading 100 pages just to finish it. The teacher doesn't reward the student who finished the test in 30 minutes with a 70% grade more than the student who finished it in an hour with a 100% grade.

This. When I read I like to read at the pace of the scene (if it's a novel) so I can play it out in my head in real time.
Reading quickly takes much of the joy out of reading.

>> No.15443570

>>15442115
You've probably gotten really bad at reading from reading the ancients. I'm guessing you mean Aristotle, Plato, and such. Reading Greek philosophy, in which you can problem skim at parts, is very different from reading a novel, in which the point of reading is the process rather than the information/thoughts. Read slower or don't read novels at all. You probably won't even enjoy it if you read at that pace.
