Monism is really the correct term, and it's an idea that Socrates, in Plato's Republic, failed to dismiss. Read up on Parmenides (and then Heidegeer) for a good example of how monism has been apart of Western philosophy before Christianity or Platonism.

When you define it as "everything is ultimately the same thing" rather than "mind and body are apart" you run into some much less complicated problems. For instance, monism can account for how mental experiences can interact with physical events - because they all exist on the same metaphysical plane - whereas a Cartesian system has to run through all kinds of counter-logical rings. I'm an Irish Catholic, and the entire church is riddled with paradoxes that defy logic. Dualism, free will and a single perfect, personal God just create all kinds of philosophical nightmares that both Protestant's and Catholics take to be beyond logic.
