YA is a marketing gimmick. Hence its bankruptcy as a genre. Anyone writing YA intentionally has already abandoned trying to do anything good or meaningful. The YA novel is a children's novel made without care, or a work for adults dumbed down. A good YA novel is simply a great novel from outside the genre rebranded to drive more sales.

I kind of liked series of unfortunate events, but I haven’t voluntarily read YA since middle school.
I was forced to read some in high school which solidified my hatred for public school systems even further

Not a series, but the book When Marnie was There by Joan Robertson is a classic for anyone of any age. Its prose is personal, dignified and down-to earth all at the sqme time. It was even adapted into a Ghibli movie. Definitely recommend reading, watching or both.

They're a bit different though. The book takes place in the 60's when it was written in Norfolk, England. The movie takes place in the mid 2010's in Hokkaido (rural Northern Japanese island). Gorgeous, beuutiful story about the meaning of frienship and companionship. I love it so much and I'll be doing my yearly rewatch in a couple weeks.

I reread the “His Dark Materials” series recently after not reading them since I was kid and sort of liked them. The third book falls off a bit, and I understood the anti-religious theme a lot more.

People from the ages 16 to 28 generally are the driving force for what's "trendy" in consumer markets. You can see this as movies, music, TV, and art. So why shouldn't authors market towards that same group if books can be considered a form of artistic expressionism?

This.
A book is either a good book or a bad book.
The idea that we need to intentionally write shitty books aimed at children because they are too dumb to read actually good books is a jewish ploy to make excuses and create a market for incompetent hacks.

What's trendy is just as strongly defined by what is marketed as by what people prefer. Why do YA novels exist? They exist as a genre in order to corner that demographic.

YA novels don't reflect the tastes and preferences of 16-28 year olds. They reflect the tastes and preferences of a very specific set of adult woman, mostly in their early twenties to mid thirties.

They are supposedly aimed at ages 13-18, but in actuality they are written by and for adult women who grew up on Harry Potter or Twilight and were emboldened to never progress past that by the culture of consumption as a substitute for personal growth that has been taking over since Gen X were raised by television in the 80s.

I'm starting to write a book that I would consider to be in the same field of audience as an Animorphs or Goosebumps book. Like, kids horror. So, a little dark but not grotesque. Is this a bad idea if YA novels are considered a gimmick?

Seems silly to think that there's nothing noble in writing literature for children. As if children don't matter. I've found many books for the young to be mindblowing as an adult. Imagine what young people think? e.g. Shel Silverstein and Roald Dahl.

Those aren't YA. Those are children's books. YA is not equivalent. Many children's books are lumped in after the fact in order to legitimize the genre by publishers marketing new YA, the side effect being that a YA reader might be deceived into purchasing something worthwhile. The YA genre fundamentally exists to market works dumbed down to the level a child could appreciate to adults.

A book written for children, with care and attention, is not YA. YA books ape the structure and themes of of children's books towards women who never grew up(and it is women, and not men, for men who are most similar to those women simply do not read fiction, or exclusively read high fantasy, which does not pretend to be for children).

>>15408694
Are you writing it for children, with the purpose of making something for a child? Then it's not YA, even though a publisher might choose to market it as so.

I don't see why not. But, to only read juvenile books is kind of sad when you are in your twenties. My friends who are obsessed with anime don't realize that most of their shows are made for teenage boys and girls.

Whats worse is many people over the age of 20 who are into manga genuinely believe that it is a valid form of literature, they even compare it to real book and more often than not, even refuse to read real books because they have no pictures in them. Sad.

All the most beloved YA lit is surprisingly brainy when you revisit it as an adult. Everything Pullman ever wrote of course, The Jungle Books and Just So Stories, Earthsea. I enjoy Dr Seuss immensely from a socially conscientious perspective. And I'll throw in Harry Potter because I know I'll get some (you)s.

I don't know. I stopped reading YA lit because the characters were always so retarded. Whenever a character would do something they thought was really smart I would think to myself 'this is going to come back a chapter or two later and be a problem' and sure enough that exact thing would happen and the main character would be shocked.

I think you may be projecting. There is certainly those types of books but they are normally labeled as urban fantasy and have a female mc, generally there are vampires, magic, and a lot of sex scenes. No males read such books unless they have mental problems.
YA are regular stories targetted at adults except often mc is somewhat younger so that its easier for younger audience to identify with him or her.
