ITT: "Interesting" facts about writers

Allen Poe married his cousin, was a drunk with night terrors.

Kit Marlowe was a spy, an atheist, and a homosexual.

Dickens cheated on his wife and padded his stories for money.

Norman Mailer was a drunk, drug-addled bastard who stabbed his wife at a party.

H.P Lovecraft was a racist of every race, married a woman yet they never had sex (He was still a virgin even after death), divorced her to live with his aunts, become extremely poor as he gets older, then died a horrible and painful death from intestinal cancer and malnutrition.

Robert E Howard was a narcissistic closet-case who lived with his mother and killed himself after she died.

I used to write a lot with pen and paper, and I have to say there is something to what anon is saying. When typing on a computer it's much harder to leave a decent-but-not-perfect sentence be and continue on with the story. It's easy to get stuck tweaking small amounts of text over and over again, and because there's no evidence once you've done all that revising it's hard to recognize how much time and mental energy you've wasted on some tiny and insignificant fraction of the story.

Granted, using a typewriter today is almost always a hipster affectation first and a practical consideration second, but that doesn't mean it can't be useful.

It's pretty clear what he's saying even if you don't agree with it. Feigned misunderstanding is one of my pet peeves.

If you really don't get it I'll explain it to you in simple terms.

What he's saying is that it may be detrimental to be able to conveniently edit anytime you wish because this may hinder your flow and speed of writing. He suggests that writing everything out, seeing how it works and then editing is better than constantly editing every sentence as you go.

Now I'm not saying I agree with his premise (why can't you simply do that on a computer indeed), but what he's saying is very clear and understandable.

Well, let's analyze this thread to see what happened. An argument started over typewriter use (seriously) and remained relatively civil for quite some time. Then Fabolous started being a bitch. Sorry. I'm not biased here, I honestly am just looking back at this thread and the fight basically started because Faboo was being passive-agressive as hell, with a lot of insulting language. EVEN THEN the fight over tripfags doesn't really start until Faboo makes a post about Ordinary (another tripfag) and then a big tripfag fight starts.

So (and I have to say honestly this surprised me) in this case the thread started off funny and interesting. Fabulous came in and got involved in a dumb argument about typewriters which stayed quite civil despite Fabulous being ridiculously passive aggressive / insulting. But no acrimonious argument actually broke out until Fabulous AGAIN tried to start one THIS TIME BY SAYING SOME SHIT ABOUT ANOTHER TRIPFAG. So basically the conclusions we can draw from this are (1) Fabulous is a bitch (2) the common tripfag assertion that the reason tripfags are inflammatory is because Anons can't just leave them be is entirely wrong.

I think the main thing to remember in all of this is that the fact remains, despite all of their failings, oddities, perversions and proclivities, these authors collectively stand out amongst the greatest in history.

I personally think Poe, Lovecraft, Howard and Dickens are amongst my favorite authors of all time, despite the fact that they were what most people would consider "dysfunctional" at best.
