Sphere is a better version of Solaris. I think the first half of it is the best thing Crichton ever wrote. It kind of falls off, but that first half, is the good shit.

Most of Philip K Dick is very "un-science-y" sci-fi. He doesn't really care about the science; he cares about some little guy caught up in a crazy world which probably isn't real.

Flowers for Algernon doesn't care about the science of IQ enhancement.

The Ugly Little Boy doesn't care about the science of time travel.

I didn't think it was that good overall, but the black mathematician was done well. Most writers are terrible at portraying intelligent people but he was believable. And entering the space-ship was pretty good.
