What's /lit/'s opinion on nyrb? Are their books decent quality? I ask because I see them posted here often, and I recently learned Project Gutenberg (and by extension Standard Ebooks) censor their literature. On the other hand, I hear Penguin Classics does not censor their works, from what I understand.
Does NYRB censor anything? Are their others that do or don't censor their literature?

Disregard that error, I'm a retard.

where did you read that Gutenberg censors their books?

They're fine, but they shouldn't be your only publisher.

Oh? This is new to me. Source?

I actually learned it on here. Some anons were stating that they were "modernizing" or modifying certain things to be a little more up to date with currently "acceptable" standards or whatever. But these are anons, so I could be a gullible retard. It may have been translations. I first heard of it because I mentioned Standard Ebooks having books you could get for free.
In any case, my question still stands -- How are nyrb? Do they censor/"modernize" books or concepts or even details within them? How is the quality?

Jokes on you, it's already done. I'm a pro hackerman so I'm gonna tell all the media sites about it.

They made some changes in terms of moving slightly away from vanilla text toward adding covers and so on. I wonder if there could be confusion there? I think if a book was going to be extremely controversial, they would probably shy away from adding it in the first place.

NYRB books are decently produced, yeah. I find they hold up better than Penguin Classics with time and use.

The only modernisation I'm aware of with either publisher is in terms of additions: forewords, footnotes. These sorts of things are always going to reflect the mood of the time to some extent. Plutarch gets an intro reminding us not to expose babies on hillsides and so on. Middle English books are sometimes translated to modern English, but that's an industry standard.

Also, if you're concerned about censorship, the bigger issue may be where you obtain your books. Amazon are doing more than any individual publisher to attempt to control discourse.

First off, thank you for the serious response.
>moving slightly away from vanilla text
Any details or guesses as to what this may mean? Or more importantly, how significant these slight changes are?

As far as NYRB goes, I was wondering about picking some up, hence my question. Thank you for offering your experience with them. Guess I'll be looking at more of their offerings.

Yeah, I've abstained from buying from Amazon as best I can, and the place I moved to is a small country town in Southern U.S. Lots of book stores around and they all seem very happy to see people coming into their shops. Gonna stick to that more when I can, and only visit big box or other sites for stuff I can't obtain there. If I can find Penguin Classics or NYRB stuff in the small shops, all the better.

Gutenberg books used to be formatted very minimally. No covers, no bold fonts or italics. And each one would have a header starting
>**Welcome To The World of Free Plain Vanilla Electronic Texts**
They've been changing this a little bit over the last few years. First adding scans of old covers to some of the newly added books, then auto-generated covers to all of the older ones. Chapter headings get bolded now. It's not necessarily a bad thing, although the cover design could benefit from a going over by somebody not suffering from colour blindness (pic related).

It's nice to support local stores if you still have them, especially after Corona-Chan killed quite a few. They're usually delighted to order things in for you. Personally, I'm still looking for a good online aggregator, having only recently learned that AbeBooks is a subsidiary of Amazon.

Doesn't seem so bad as long as they don't mess with the content.
And yeah, AbeBooks belonging to Amazon was something I only recently learned as well.

NYRB are pretty good, they have a lot of stuff that are only translated by them, at least for a while. Sometimes they're translation is even better than current ones, I know Kolyma stories is one of those. And the books themselves are good quality, though a little on the pricey side.

You don't need to speculate; the entire process is open. You can read about it here: https://standardebooks.org/contribute/producing-an-ebook-step-by-step

You're likely referring to the typographical changes and the modernization of spelling.
