I've come to realize that Americans, who have no sense of tact, subtlety, for whom everything has to be made big and obvious, for whom the most valuable personality traits are confidence and assertiveness, inevitably come to prefer Asuka, with her loud shenanigans, foolhardy confidence, and a small mind which they can relate to, simply because they do not possess the ability to understand Rei.
Europeans, on the other hand, and to some extent the Japanese have the ability to look past the surface. Loud speaking, assertive poses, put on vigor will not affect their opinion as much as that of americans. As they are cultured people, they view such personality traits as more obnoxious than attractive. What matters to them is your insights, your resilience, your ability to make good judgements when they matter. They quickly come to see through Asuka and all her vanity, and regard Rei as a deeply complex and an interesting character.
This trend is most clearly illustrated in the type of film the two different types of people produce. Whenever an american mentions European cinema, you know it will likely be a subtle, thought-provoking film, not afraid to take its time and aimed not just to entertain the viewer, as it's not a circus, but to leave a lasting impact on him, ideally teaching him something about himself and others. Tarkovsky, Fellini, Bergman, Truffaut, Antonioni, Almodovar, Haneke are among the most successful movie directors in Europe, and all of their films share these qualities.
As for american movies, it suffices to look at their biggest box office hits. They are star wars, marvel movies, fast and furious (movies about tough guys driving cars fast).
The inevitable conclusion that one comes to see is that Rei is, indeed, best girl and only uncultured swine will say otherwise.

The stages the Self in Fichte's "The Vocation of Man" goes through what the Viewer of NGE should be going through when watching the series.
1. Doubt 2.Knowledge then 3. Faith with Faith having the conclusion that one must act so one ought to act and that it is in this acting that the vocation of man lies; acting between people is the ultimate act a person can do.
Similar as in how completely nullifying the "AT Fields" between people would be inferior it is necessary for us to first have to perform these acts of getting together with people to learn, love, hate, etc. Even if things could be different you wouldn't want it anyother way. This realization first enables one to really "live" and to imbibe life in all its complexities.

The psychology of why we want one over the other is extremely interesting. I believe you made a great error when you said Americans love Asuka for her loud and obvious behavior. Someone who genuinely thought such a thing has never been in love. It is not the apparent that interests us men about a woman, it is the reversal of her character. That is, people don't like Asuka for her vulgarity, people like her because it interests them reversing her into exposing and revealing her sensitivities and subtleties, her ability to be quiet, to say nothing, her ability to not inflate, but deflate her ego to you, in front of you, for you, because of you. That is what interests us.
On the other hand, people are interested in the cold, quiet, and detached Rei not for this coldness, quietness, and detachedness, but for the private reversal of her public nature. That is, her loud, expressive, vulgar, impersonal side, an extreme closeness and dependancy on you, to you, and for you.
So the question here is, which reversal demonstrates the greatest, healthiest tastes? The cold Rei reversed into a hot character, or the hot Asuka reversed into a cold character?

The series and ending movie is one of the greatest creations in that medium, the Twin Peaks-esque deconstruction of its genres which lays bare our soul through Japanese folklore of the late 20th century. The ideas themselves aren't that fresh, but the way they're presented is appealing. There's also a very apparent and strong influence of Freud, Jung, Kierkegaard, Schopenhauer and techno-mysticism throughout.

There's a strong shift in the middle of the series when it starts turning inwards. It's obvious because it starts getting darker and I think even the creator said he started getting interested in philosophy and psychology while becoming disenchanted with the whole anime otaku pop culture thing while production was taking place. The mecha stuff isn't the point in the end and you don't have to get it although a lot about the robot-things is metaphorical.

Excerpts from Kierkegaard's work "The Sickness Unto Death", also the name of the 16th episode of the original Eva series:

SHINJI
>(1) In despair at not willing to be onself, the despair of weakness
>This form of despair is: in despair at not willing to be oneself; or still lower, in despair at not willing to be a self; or lowest of all in despair at willing to be another than himself...
>For [he] does not recognize his self, he recognizes himself only by his dress... he recognizes that he has a self only by externals. There is no more ludicrous a confusion, for a self is just infinitely different from externals...
>For as no human body is perfection, so neither is any self. This difficulty, be it what it may, frightens the man away shudderingly. Or something happens to him which causes within him a breach with immediacy deeper than he has made by reflection. Or his imagination discovers a possibility which, if it were to come to pass, would likewise become a breach with immediacy. So he despairs. His despair is that of weakness, a passive suffering of the self, in contrast to the despair of self-assertion...
>For all that, this despair is to be referred to the formula: in despair at not willing to be oneself. Just as a father disinherits a son, so the self is not willing to recognize itself after it has been so weak. In despair it cannot forget this weakness, it hates itself in a way, it will not humble itself in faith under its weakness in order to gain itself again...

ASUKA
>(2) The despair of willing despairingly in oneself - defiance
>The self despairingly wills to dispose of itself or to create itself, to make itself the self it wills to be, distinguishing in the concrete self what it will and what it will not accept... He wills first to undertake to refashion the whole thing, in order to get out of it in this way a self such as he wants to have, produced by the aid of the infinite form of the negative self - and it is thus he wills to be himself. That is to say, he is not willing to begin with the beginning, but with "in the beginning." He is not willing to attire himself in himself, nor to see his task in the self given him; by the aid of being the infinite form he wills to construct it himself.
>So the despairing self is constantly building nothing but castles in the air, it fights only in the air. All these experimented virtues make a brilliant showing; for an instant they are enchanting, like an oriental poem: such self-control, such firmness, such ataraxia, etc., border almost on the fabulous. Yes, they do, to be sure; and also at the bottom of it all there is nothing. >The self wants to enjoy the entire satisfaction of making itself into itself, or developing itself, of being itself; it wants to have the honor of this poetical, this masterly plan according to which it has understood itself. And yet in the last resort it is a riddle how it understands itself; just at the instant when it seems to be nearest to having the fabric finished, it can arbitrarily resolve the whole thing into nothing.

Shinji and Asuka are both in a state of existential despair. Shinji is in the form of despair at not willing to be himself, and Asuka in despair at willing to be herself. I think this lends a lot of meaning to the conclusion of End of Evangelion. Shinji finally understands the importance of being a Self apart from the external and so makes the conscious decision to return to individuality and end instrumentality. Asuka, the defiant one, finally shows a sign of humility and understanding as she strokes Shinji's cheek, and is now on the path to becoming a true Self.

I started watching this a few days ago because 4chan memed me into it
>depressed teenage boy who gets bullied at school and is a social outcast is actually the "chosen one" meant to save the world
>moves in to a deep state facility with a super sexy cool relatable young girl who dresses immodestly and cares so much about him
>multiple shots of her ass and feet and tits to get all the teenage viewers dreaming about her
>ribald scene where she sees his penis
>upon finding out that he is the chosen one, all the bullies at school apologise and make friends with him
>all the girls fawn over him
>he is now the cool guy at school with a sexy roommate but he still has some unresolved issues
Lmao what the fuck? This is just mindless wish fulfilment for teenage boys like most animes and YA entertainment. There is nothing here that characterises the great art and literature people have compared this anime to. Even worse, it banks on the egotistical part in us all that wants to think we are 'special' somehow, that we are above everyone else and that our life has some lofty purpose which has yet to be realised. This egotism is especially prevalent among 'nerdy' teenagers who feel socially ostracised, which is the whole reason this 'teenage kid who is le chosen one' genre even exists (Naruto, Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, etc.).

I'm going to continue watching in the hopes that it surprises me and gets better but my impression so far hasn't been positive.

The subtext is there in the early eps. anyway. The tone's very psychical and foreboding, more than the usual show I think.

Should I watch this? Is it worth it? The only anime I've seen is Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood or something like that and I really enjoyed it. I see Evangelion is available on Netflix so TELL ME RIGHT NOW SHOULD I WATCH THIS OR NOT FUCK

Monster fucking SUCKS. One of the worst shows of all time.

The whole point of anime is the foreignness allows us to abstract it to a degree we can enjoy things we otherwise wouldn't, hence broadening our perspective. Watching in english makes it cringe.

I don't understand the loud hate-boner over Monster. There's tons of shitty juvenile psycho-crime shit in anime (death note a good example). Monster pulls it off pretty tastefully, with a lot of added existential depth too.
