My problem is that everytime I speak with a professor I begin to doubt what I'm saying. So I'm just hoping that I don't say something stupid, unfortunately when I'm in this butthurt state I talk more (in an attempt to be less nervous). This is obviously problematic, since, the more you say the greater your chances are of saying something stupid.

Realize that (good) professors enjoy educating. If you go to their office with questions or difficulties, they get pleasure from helping you. They enjoy it in-itself, just like you might enjoy skiing or collecting raisin boxes for no particular reason other than your nature.

In addition, when you go to office hours or seek them outside of class, it shows them that you give a shit about their subject and they're not just wasting all the time they've invested into preparing assignments and lectures. This gives the teacher a sense of worth and place.

Finally, most professors really do love their subject. They've invested thousands of dollars and years of their life into studying it. Even if they don't get pleasure out of educating, they certainly enjoy a talk about something their field. If you're just going to office hours to bounce an idea off your teacher, they'll probably enjoy it, especially if it turns out to be a really good idea. Realize that they've spent a ton of time (dis)proving these kinds of ideas, albeit (usually) somewhat more advancely put.

There is a difference between believing in a homogeneous majority of people linked by common traits, and believing that some behaviors are more valid than others.

The OP himself (I don't know if that's you or not) obviously doesn't consider his psychological quirks positive or he wouldn't be asking how to change them. In the context of socializing, dependence on drugs is also behaviorally negative. In the context of societal opinion the same is true.
