No and this is final. Anyone who has ever written something worth your time wrote original stories with original characters. Any autismo who ever wrote fanfiction was merely indulging their tumblerina dreams of being in charge of their favorite series and making the characters fuck each other.

Honestly. You’re right. Fanfiction writers are low quality. But, once in a blue moon you get fantastic writer that makes you question why they are writing fanfiction.

Take that rare good fan fiction writer, strap 10 more IQ points to them, and they'll be smart enough to realize that all they have to do is slightly change the names of the characters and other textual elements and they'll have an original work they can take to market. Why would you read someone exactly one standard deviation stupider than they need to be to be an actual writer?

The lion’s share of fan anything is utter garbage. But there are authors out there who don’t care to make an independently project or already have some or plan to have them in the future.

They just really autistically love an existing work so much they want to build off it, or more often they love it but hate it so much they want to rewrite it and have other autists accept it as their personal canon.

not that I would know

I guess the types of fanfics you read depend on the sort of media you consume. I mostly read /a/ and /co/ related fics, myself, because that's what I do. I tend to watch stuff, as opposed to playing video games. I have read a few /tv/ related fics from time to time.

Have had an idea for a star wars fan fic in which a wannabe sith hires a merc team to go get a bunch of sith artifacts for him so that he can play the part of a dark lord.
Merc squad gets killed and dude that hired them doesn't pay up so he goes after him for revenge.
Is it worth writing as a fan fic or should I just rework it into it's own separate story since outside of a few references and the setting it wouldn't be star wars?
