alright, post yer charts an that.
I'm making some charts on the 20th century and so far ive finished the first quarter. Now obviously I can't have read or even know everything of worth that was published in the first 25 years so if anyone knows of any major omissions I've made or even just a personal favourite that they think is worth putting on there then send em. It can be any genre (fiction, nonfiction, philosophy, play, poetry etc. especially the last two as apart from a few big names I know very little of them), and it'd be especially good if you've got summat from 1909, 1910, 1916 or 1918. Alright, cheers

I never know how to count compilations, my bookshelf is sorted by date. I used to count a compilation as the last addition of material, which is fine for a "Faulkner vol. 2 1936-1939" but with borges and whitman for example, there are many decades between first publication and final editions, it's frustrating to see borges next to the bell jar and leaves of grass after mark twain

in general, the older people get, the worse readers they become. Your post is a perfect example. Whereas a teenager can actually have a pure, sincere engagement with a book like the republic because they have not yet become hardheaded adults, the average 25-year old with a bachelor's degree will worry about questions like
>What should I read before this?
>What is the historical context of this book?
>What do I need to know in order to read this?
>What were the motivations of the author?
>What are the conventional interpretations of this book?
>Which translation should I read?
>What will reading this do for me?
>Am I ready to read this book?
>What should I read after this?

The Republic is a great example. One of the greatest books ever written, and it mostly falls on completely deaf ears because of the "context" that is assigned to the book by high school teachers, community college and government university professors, and the reading hobbyist public.

The garbage that is peddled about "Platonic Irony", and the account that is given of the city-soul metaphor absolutely cripple most readers. Along with all the other phrases you will read about Plato in a McGraw-Hill Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Pearson textbook.

This post clearly expresses the disposition of the stem-shit IEP reader:

>too incompetent to read the republic

These people believe that reading is a technical skill, 'competent' in the way that drain pipe technician is 'competent', and that this depends on that and so on.

You should really read Plato's other dialogues like Euthyphro and The Symposium. The Republic is overrated, and representative of only a very specific period of Plato's thought on a very particular subject matter. I wish it was reccomended less, especially to new(er) readers of Plato.

Well, it really depends on your personal goals.

If you want to learn more about philosophy, in addition to those two Platonic dialogues I mentioned, you might want to check out the Nicomachean Ethics by Aristotle. It's a really fascinating, good entry-level text to begin contending with Aristotle's thought. Though, I'd recommend having at least a few Platonic dialogues under your belt before you start diving into Aristotle.

In terms of literature, there are so, so many options. The hardest part is picking one text and truly focusing on reading the entire text carefully.

It is very well known, I know, but in my view one of the most essential foundational texts is the Old Testament (start with smaller, more digestible books like Judah, go on to Exodus, and you really must read Job.) I highly recommend the New Revised Standard Version. Many, many people will try to force the King James Version down your throat, but in my view, it's completely illogical to read such a poorly inaccurate, outdated, and often dreadfully longwinded, arcane translation. The New Revised Standard Version is the result of modern scholarship, is far more accurate in terms of getting across the intent of the original Hebrew, and I find the prose to be clear, beautiful, and well-constructed.

Some of my personal favorite, which I think rank among the essential works of literature include: the Theogony by Hesiod, Othello by Shakespeare, The Canterbury Tales by Chaucer, the Complete Stories of John Cheever, the Complete Stories of Flannery O'Connor, Don Quixote, A Confederacy of Dunces, and the Cosmicomics by Italo Calvino.

The midwit is obsessed with establishing the conventional narrative of 'context' and 'prerequisites' of a book for would-be readers. The disease, which is hatred of the human mind, desires to spread itself to all who are youthful in mind and independent in thought.

Here is one of the most typical faulty messages of that narrative:

>The Republic is overrated, and representative of only a very specific period of Plato's thought on a very particular subject matter.

We have inherited from medieval scholarship a chronology of Plato's works that is total nonsense. At best, the typical chronology provided (early, middle, late) represent the conventional view at any given time of the difficulty of dialogues. At worst, it is random.

It is radically self-evident that the Republic is not a discussion of a very particular subject matter but of something universal.

Olympiodorus:
>When he [Plato] was about to die, he saw in a dream that he had become a swan and was going from tree to tree, and in this manner he caused the greatest trouble for the bird-catchers [τοῖς ἰξευταῖς]. Simmias the Socratic judged that Plato would elude those after him who wished to interpret him. For the interpreters who attempt to hunt out what the ancients had in mind are similar to bird-catchers, but Plato is elusive because it is possible to hear and understand his words in many ways, both physically, and ethically, and theologically, and literally, just like those of Homer as well.

Read the dialogues in whatever order you like. None are more difficult than others, none are easier. None are earlier and none are later. None require information provided in other dialogues. None of them are overrated and none of them are underrated. They are all poorly understood by most. Each dialogue, like every great work of literature and philosophy, is an endeavor equally accessible to all men. It's questions and discussions are universal and timeless; they are not proposition 612a.ii of Mathematically Crafted Scheme of the World 400 BC edition. At the same time, the endeavor presented in each dialogue is one of an endless difficulty (and reward, if pursued) and the dialogues are all deeply connected. All that read the Euthyphro seriously will be thinking about it and the questions it poses for the rest of their lives. Only the simple-of-mind and black-at-heart think it is a simple introductory dialogue of any less depth and seriousness than The Republic or Laws. The same with all the others.

technically true, but you can drag images into the window and place them in blank spots.
in the post you responded to, none of those albums are real. and pic related i made using the drag and drop method.
you just need to find pictures of the covers and add them manually.
its not as easy as music/movies, but still possible.

is there a site that /lit/ uses for their charts? im more of a casual browser of this board

i recently finished Child of God and ive gotta say, it wasnt very good. it just felt like nothing much happened. the way he writes in dialect is cool, but i was expecting so much more from the praise id seen it get here and elsewhere.

>> No.15302222

>>15302193
yeah Child of God isn't very representative of what people like McCarthy for
Suttree then Blood Meridian is the best order
If you like them THEN start to read the rest, I really like The Sunset Limited but wouldn't rec it to most

ive read No Country and The Road before so i figured i knew what i was getting into, but i was mildly disappointed. i didnt hate it but it was just kind of uneventful.

and ive started Blood Meridian twice but got hung up on the spanish and just kind of lost focus and gave up.
im gonna try it again because i just found a pdf with translations of all the spanish bits.
and i plan to read Suttree eventually, its been on my list for a long time.

first off, wow, damn impressive collection you've got going on. ill be going through it for years to come.

but also you should add pic related for found footage.
the one that's in TV & Movies> Movie> Themed was a chart i made called "haha i liked all these movies haha" and they were examples of movies that most people didnt like except for me, more of a mockery of my own personal taste than an actual chart.
the big september chart is a good representative of the genre though.
