This is just me skimming this once over but parts of what he's saying about the rocket in relation to the pious kind of reminds me of what happened to the collective psyche during the Black Plague in Europe and how it reflected in the art they made during that time. You started to see a lot of depictions of religious leaders succumbing to disease just as the peasants did. The rocket, like the Black Death, acts as a grand equalizer as it lays waste to Europe, piety and pedigree is no credential against pure, impersonal annihilation. I'm not saying that's what he means in the passage, but that's what I'm reminded of.
