i just realized when i read descriptions of characters in a book i never fully picture their faces. i picture each character like a silhouette, there is no detail to their faces. wtf is wrong with me

Same. I know people who visualize entire scenes. I've had friends who do this describe it to me and it's totally different. I always picture the internal "logic" of something like a silhouette in a dark background, but never connected into a whole scene. I can't maintain persistent details.

Same. I have trouble visualizing scenes when writing too.

I always visualized faces as mere silhouetes, at least until a proper description comes, then I try to give them features in my mind

I normally visualize the setting a lot more than the appearance of the characters

It's normal. Ever heard the expression a picture is worth a thousand worlds? Narrative wise, it's perfectly true. You'd have to fill a full page with details to get a precise picture. Even the best prose stylist would turn it into a boring exercise because there are only so many ways to talk about hair or the color of the buttons on a shirt.
Most writers include a vague description, a few noticeable features, stuff that they feel is important to describe their characters and locations, expecting the reader to fill in the blanks. You could try to practice visualizing more and more details. I've tried it but my mental images are still somewhat vague or they change from page to page.

For me it’s like faces in a dream. There’s detail but it’s very vague. Unless there’s a description of their facial features.

I think it’s pretty common. Probably has to do with the difficulty of picturing a sustained, complex, and mobile image. While also reading and comprehending that reading at the same time. I’d be surprised if someone could truly do both at the exact same time for an extended period.

>> No.15278176

I use to visualize faces of my own invention, and then realize later on they were wrong. I wonder how many subtexts I missed in books because I didn't pay attention to what the author meant. Even the way a woman's hair is parted, or the state of a character's nails can tell you so much backstory.

Anyone else visualize characters in an anime style? I feel like I have watched too much anime, because I do this.

This. I don't visualize anything and I don't insert as or associate myself with any of the characters.

I've noticed that I've made a number of actors in my mind and whenever I read a new book I assign to each one of them a new role with slight modifications. Most of them are either people I know or historical people I admire.

I visualize the characters in perfect detail, I just never pay attention to the descriptions and imagine them based solely on the aesthetics of the letters on their name.
