15244069 No.15244069 [Reply] [Original]

>"The geometrician teaches me how to work out the size of my estates - rather than how to work out how much a man needs in order to have enough. He teaches me to calculate, putting my fingers into the service of avarice, instead of teaching me that there is no point whatsoever in that sort of computation and that a person is none the happier for having properties which tire accountants out."
>"You geometers can calculate the areas of circles, can reduce any given shape to a square, can state the distance separating stars. Nothing's outside your scope when it comes to measurement. Well, if you're such an expert, measure a man's soul; tell me how large or how small that is. You can define a straight line; what use is that to you if you've no idea what straightness means in life?"

STEMfags absolutely BTFO.

Anyone can study philosophy, you just have to read the books. Understanding mathematics takes intellect.

So this particular letter, LXXXVIII, begins with the following two sentences:
>You want to know my attitude towards liberal studies.
>Well, I have no respect for for any study whatsoever if the end is making money.
He talks about other areas of liberal studies like music and literature.
He describes these other fields of studies as "out apprenticeship, not our real work."
I recommend reading the letter in full though (along with the other ones).

Yes Seneca and actual Stoicism is very based, shame that all the plebs just assume its some kind of Pewdiepie tier "let's get this bread and love doing it 7 days a week" which modern self-help brainlets have co-opted it. A reading of primary sources like Letters from a Stoic even for the first few pages should tell you that everything you've assumed about it is completely incorrect and that's it's actually the most based philosophy and unironic answer to life

Hegel loved to shit on math too

>The convincingness of this defective cognition is something of which
mathematics is proud and which it brags about to philosophy, but it rests
solely on the poverty of its purpose and the defectiveness of its material, and
it is for that reason the kind of thing that philosophy must spurn. – Its purpose, or its concept, is magnitude. It is precisely this relationship which is
non-essential and devoid of the concept. For that reason, the movement of
knowing in mathematics takes place only on the surface; it does not touch
on the thing that really matters, does not touch on the essence, or the concept, and hence it does not constitute any kind of comprehension of what
is at stake. – The material that provides mathematics with this gratifying
wealth of truths consists of space and numerical units. Space is the existence
in which the concept inscribes its differences as it would in an empty, dead
element in which the differences themselves are just as unmoved and lifeless. The actual is not something spatial as it is taken to be in mathematics;
neither concrete sensuous intuition nor philosophy wastes any time with
the kinds of non-actualities which are the things of mathematics.

Describes its flaw exactly, its concern and focus on understanding the external, it's here where the endeavour is misplaced as like Hegel says these things are dead and without substance. Yes Seneca was wealthy and powerful, he was the tutor of the emperor in childhood and remained as the close advisor to the imperator of all of Europe. He didn't give a fuck about his money though and wrote extensively about his practises regarding it, viewed it as a neutral thing and didn't actively seek it or get rid of it and he certainly wouldn't have lived in any luxury, he spoke frequently about undergoing periods of eating just pieces of bread per day and getting used to poverty for purity's sake. If he'd lost all his money in a day it wouldn't have bothered him at all, he might've even been thankful, one of the ways Nero forced him to not retire and retreat into a self-contained philosophical life like Seneca advises to do, was by forcing wealth upon him so that he had a moral obligation to continue his services to the state.

Doubt that this was anything he actively sought, I remember the letter where he describes why travelling is pointless since you never escape your own company, were these given to him or something? Wouldn't make much sense for him to accrue wealth since he lived so frugally, there's even that story that it took him hours to bleed and needing a bath because of how thin his blood was due to a minimal diet

>> No.15248082

>>15247993
Now I don't know if he "actively" sought them, but he was very good at what he did, i.e. writing, politics, oratory etc. I doubt success just falls into someone's lap without him asking, but I suppose it's possible he just sought to do as good of a job for society as he could.

Yeah I think that's partly the case, remember when he was advising Lucilius to abandon his governorship of Sicily (I think) and to seek what really matters and says (paraphrasing, would have to find the exact line) "For I too remember how I once used to love to win my cases and give my eloquent speeches in the courts, then I became unwilling to do so, then unable."
